Description
Registered Nurse - PCU
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Unit & Patient Information
- Medical Oncology with progressive care beds and some pediatric patients (pediatric experience NOT required).
- High acuity Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with some med-surg patients.
- Patient diagnoses include Solid Tumor, Orthopedic Oncology, Thoracic Oncology.
- 36-bed Oncology Telemetry unit with over 24 beds dedicated to PCU level of care.
- Focus on infection prevention protocols and patient falls.
Schedule
- Self-scheduling requests allowed; final schedule balanced and posted every 4 weeks.
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday to Friday, dayshift orientation.
- Week 2: 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor.
- Shift: 12-hour day/night rotating shifts; assignments may vary based on staffing needs.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Tech Cert Verification - National
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with use of rapid response teams
- Central line care and management
- PICC line management
- Heparin protocols
- Ability to titrate cardiac drips
- Chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
- External CPAP/BIPAP management
- High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) management
- Tracheostomy management

Orientation & Training

Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific codes apply).
- Education accreditation verification required for nursing degree from accredited programs.
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending tests allowed).
- Various health documents required including physical exam, immunizations (Tdap, MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B), TB testing or questionnaire, and flu vaccination or declination during flu season.
- Annual competency exams including medication test/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (with remediation process if needed).
- Monthly monitoring for EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG compliance.
- Required to review and sign dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies annually.
- References: 2 professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leadership.
