Description
Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (OR)
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:30 PM – 7:00 AM)
- Call Requirement: No on-call
- Weekend Requirement: Up to one weekend shift every 4 weeks
- Holiday Requirement: Must work at least one holiday period (Christmas and New Year's specified)
- Floating: May be required to float within scope to meet unit/facility needs
Facility Highlights
- Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet designated hospital
- 21 Operating Room suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, and Robotics
- Nursing team: 75% RNs trained to scrub and circulate, 25% Certified Surgical Technologists
- Charting system: EPIC
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in South Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Operating Room (OR) nursing experience, with OR experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification
- Radiation Badge (provided by agency)
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Schedule & Work Environment
- Block scheduling possible with manager approval
- Local candidates considered on a case-by-case basis
- Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks (called off hours can be combined to equal 1 shift)
- During hurricane season (June-November), employees may be assigned to emergency response teams
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Proof of work eligibility (I-9, E-Verify)
- Background checks including criminal, sex offender registry, and employment verification for last 7 years
- Education verification (diploma/transcripts)
- Clinical references (2 required)
- Employment application with complete work history and no unaccounted gaps
- Radiation badge process required before starting (may take 5-7 days)
- Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
- Drug screening: 10-panel urine drug screen within 90 days prior to start
- Immunizations and health screenings including:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years or declination form)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 90 days
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/booster documentation
- Hepatitis B titer or vaccination series or declination
- Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption (required during flu season)
- Physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands, updated annually
- Passport-style photo for badge (frontal view, business casual attire)
Additional Notes
- First-time travelers accepted
- Must complete facility-specific orientation modules prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
- COVID-19 vaccinations highly preferred but not required; declination form required if not vaccinated
- Color blindness testing required prior to start
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required
- Competency exam for OR required
- Facility may require additional certifications depending on unit assignment (e.g., ACLS, TNCC)
This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity, technologically advanced OR environment within a Level I trauma and Magnet designated hospital. Ideal candidates will have strong OR nursing experience, be flexible with scheduling, and meet all licensure and compliance requirements.
