Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (OR)
  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:30 PM – 7:00 AM)
  • Call Requirement: No on-call
  • Weekend Requirement: Up to one weekend shift every 4 weeks
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work at least one holiday period (Christmas and New Year's specified)
  • Floating: May be required to float within scope to meet unit/facility needs

Facility Highlights

  • Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet designated hospital
  • 21 Operating Room suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, and Robotics
  • Nursing team: 75% RNs trained to scrub and circulate, 25% Certified Surgical Technologists
  • Charting system: EPIC

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in South Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of Operating Room (OR) nursing experience, with OR experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification
  • Radiation Badge (provided by agency)
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Schedule & Work Environment

  • Block scheduling possible with manager approval
  • Local candidates considered on a case-by-case basis
  • Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks (called off hours can be combined to equal 1 shift)
  • During hurricane season (June-November), employees may be assigned to emergency response teams

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Proof of work eligibility (I-9, E-Verify)
  • Background checks including criminal, sex offender registry, and employment verification for last 7 years
  • Education verification (diploma/transcripts)
  • Clinical references (2 required)
  • Employment application with complete work history and no unaccounted gaps
  • Radiation badge process required before starting (may take 5-7 days)
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Drug screening: 10-panel urine drug screen within 90 days prior to start
  • Immunizations and health screenings including:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years or declination form)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 90 days
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/booster documentation
    • Hepatitis B titer or vaccination series or declination
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption (required during flu season)
  • Physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands, updated annually
  • Passport-style photo for badge (frontal view, business casual attire)

Additional Notes

  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Must complete facility-specific orientation modules prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
  • COVID-19 vaccinations highly preferred but not required; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Color blindness testing required prior to start
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam required
  • Competency exam for OR required
  • Facility may require additional certifications depending on unit assignment (e.g., ACLS, TNCC)

This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity, technologically advanced OR environment within a Level I trauma and Magnet designated hospital. Ideal candidates will have strong OR nursing experience, be flexible with scheduling, and meet all licensure and compliance requirements.
