Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Shift Details
- Unit: 8-week Neuro/General Surgery Unit, 24-bed neuroscience-focused acute care with surgical and mixed general medicine patients
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4 or 1:5 depending on staffing
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM), 36 hours/week
- Weekend Requirement: 3-4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
- Floating: Clinician may float within scope to meet unit needs
- Holiday rotation required
- Guaranteed hours: Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in South Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 1 year of Medical Surgical nursing experience within the last year
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) certification
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) certification
Additional Requirements & Information
- Local candidates considered on a case-by-case basis
- Open to block scheduling with manager approval
- Must comply with facility’s holiday and time-off restrictions
- Facility uses EPIC for charting
- Scrub color: Solid Royal Blue or White top with Royal Blue bottoms
- Hurricane season (June-November) may require emergency response team participation
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Proof of work eligibility (I-9 attestation and form)
- Copy of Driver’s License/State ID
- Social Security Card or SSN verification
- Background checks including:
- 7-year history, SSN trace, state and national criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS 3
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- Education verification (diploma/transcripts)
- NURSYS license verification (active, unencumbered)
- Drug screening: 10-panel within 90 days of start
- Physical exam: Initial and annual, attesting ability to meet job demands
- Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
- Immunizations and titers:
- Tdap within 10 years or declination form
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or vaccination series)
- Varicella (positive titer or vaccination series)
- Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days) or chest x-ray if positive history
- Flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 – Apr 30) or medical/religious exemption (no declinations accepted)
- COVID vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
- Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests as applicable
- Color blindness testing required prior to start
- Facility-specific orientation modules must be completed before orientation
- Passport-style photo required for badge
Notes for Healthcare Recruiters and Workers
- This is a night shift travel contract position on a neuroscience/general surgery unit with a mixed patient population
- Minimum 1 year RN experience required; neuro experience preferred but not mandatory
- Must hold a valid South Carolina or compact RN license
- BLS certification required; ACLS and NIHSS preferred
- Compliance with extensive background checks, immunizations, and health screenings is mandatory
- Facility uses EPIC for documentation and requires specific scrub colors
- Candidates should be prepared for possible emergency assignments during hurricane season

This position offers an opportunity to work in a Level I Trauma Center and teaching hospital environment with a focus on neuroscience and general surgery patient care.
