Registered Nurse - Med Surg Telemetry
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Registered Nurse with a minimum of 2 years of experience in high acuity Medical-Surgical Telemetry or higher. Oncology experience is preferred but not required. The role involves floating between Med Surg and Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Oncology units, including specialties such as Bone Marrow Transplant, Acute Leukemia, Hematology, Medical Oncology, Gynecological Oncology, Urology, Colorectal, Surgical Oncology, and Corrections Healthcare.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Med Surg / Telemetry
- Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year
- ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- BLS certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
Shift Details
- Rotating 12-hour day/night shifts.
- Shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks; changes based on staffing needs.
- Orientation includes one week of Monday-Friday day shifts, followed by 5 bedside orientation shifts over weeks 2 and 3.
Staffing Ratios
- PCU: 1:3, can be 1:4 with mixed acuity.
- Med Surg Telemetry: Ideally 1:4, can be 1:5.
Certifications Required
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Scale Certification
Licensure
- Must hold a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for Ohio.
Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and state fingerprinting.
- Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
- Monthly monitoring through federal exclusion lists (EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG).
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- Tdap vaccine (adult dose)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- TB questionnaire
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers
- Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31)
- Annual acknowledgment of dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies.
- Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.
Competency Requirements
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam prior to start.
- Unit-specific competency exams.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (with remediation process if needed).
Additional Notes
- No set/blocked scheduling; self-scheduling requests are submitted and balanced by management.
- Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention.
- Two professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leadership.
