Job Opportunity: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
Location: Oakland, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 8 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) to perform respiratory therapy modalities in a progressive healthcare environment. The role involves managing complex life support systems and making critical decisions affecting patient care across a wide range of patient populations from neonatal to geriatric.
Schedule
- Days, 3 shifts of 12 hours (3/12s)
- Every other weekend
- No call
- No floating
Required Experience & Certifications
- Valid Respiratory Therapist license in California
- Minimum 3 years of Respiratory Therapist experience, including experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- High School Diploma
Job Responsibilities
- Perform respiratory care procedures including ventilator management and weaning for invasive and noninvasive life support (Continuous Ventilators, BIPAP, CPAP)
- Administer oxygen and aerosolized medications (MDI, Nebulizer)
- Provide hyperinflation therapy, incentive spirometry, IPPB
- Conduct diagnostic procedures such as bronchoscopy assistance, arterial/venous/capillary blood sampling, blood gas analysis, sputum induction, bedside spirometry
- Manage secretions and provide chest physical therapy, IPV, bland aerosol therapy
- Monitor patients using pulse oximetry, end tidal CO2, apnea monitors, and conscious sedation
- Manage airway and provide cardiac support during emergency codes
- Educate patients on breathing exercises and home respiratory care routines
- Provide neonatal therapy and ventilatory care
- Complete accurate documentation of all therapy performed in medical and departmental records
- Maintain knowledge of respiratory care equipment, pharmacology, and clinical protocols
- Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, and other healthcare team members
- Respond to and assist with Code Blue calls as directed
- Attend in-service education, conferences, and staff meetings
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Graduation from an accredited school of Respiratory Therapy preferred (equivalent experience accepted)
Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year background check including SSN trace, county searches, sex offender, and other regulatory checks
- Education verification and transcript/diploma validation as applicable
- Drug screening (9-panel, excluding marijuana/cannabinoids due to California law)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Fit mask test within 1 year, renewed annually
- Immunizations and titers including Tdap, MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, TB screening, flu vaccination during flu season
- Respiratory safety clearance required annually
- Various facility-specific documents and attestations to be reviewed and signed prior to start
Additional Notes
- No prior travel experience explicitly required
- Candidate must have full 7 years of work history documented with no gaps
- Unit-specific skills checklist and competency exams may be required and renewed annually
- Must maintain good rapport with healthcare team and patients
- Must notify supervisor or physicians of any unreasonable or erroneous orders
