Registered Nurse - Observation Unit
Location: Urbana, Illinois
Employment Type: Clinical Nursing
Shift: Days, 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
The Registered Nurse (RN) provides professional nursing care to a group of patients during a designated shift. Responsibilities include utilizing the nursing process, applying current nursing trends and technology, and managing resources to deliver quality patient care.
Essential Functions
- Perform all unit-specific nursing duties within the scope of service.
- Implement procedures and theories related to the observation unit.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of nursing care.
- Complete initial patient assessments upon admission and develop individualized plans of care.
- Implement and modify plans of care based on ongoing patient evaluation.
- Ensure patient and staff safety by identifying and addressing hazards.
- Communicate effectively with healthcare team members to resolve issues.
- Provide constructive feedback to peers and engage in professional development.
- Fulfill all departmental competency requirements.
Department-Specific Functions
- Assess IV sites every 4 hours.
- Start new IVs according to policy.
- Maintain documentation standards as verified by quarterly chart audits.
- Attend at least 5 out of 6 staff meetings annually.
- Identify changes in patient status and respond appropriately.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing required
Experience
- Minimum 1 year of experience in a Direct Observation Unit (DOU) within the last year
- Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Licensure & Certifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
