Registered Nurse (ER)

Location: Freeport, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day and Evening shifts available
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week

Job Overview

• Provide emergency care in a 24-bed Emergency Department (ED) that is non-trauma but Stemi/Stroke ready.
• Patient population ranges from neonates to geriatrics with a wide variety of diagnoses including respiratory viruses, MI, MVA, and behavioral health cases.
• Average patient volume: 60-80 patients per 24 hours.
• Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:4-5, adjusted based on acuity and staffing.
• Moderate sedation and critical care drip management required.
• Flexibility required for rotating start times and shift coverage including every other weekend and holiday rotations.
• No call or standby requirements.
• Potential floating to Medical-Surgical, Telemetry, or ICU units depending on experience.

Required Qualifications

• Illinois RN license.
• Minimum 3 years of Emergency Room nursing experience.
• Certifications required: BLS, ACLS, PALS or ENPC, TNCC or TNS, NIHSS.
• Moderate sedation experience.
• Phlebotomy experience preferred (blood draws may be performed by nurses or techs).
• Ability to work all shifts with flexibility.
• Professional solid-color scrubs required.

Department & Support Staff

• ED techs (CNA/EMT/Paramedic) assist with EKGs, blood draws, wound care, transport, vitals, and room maintenance.
• Respiratory Therapists available as needed; nurses may perform breathing treatments.
• Imaging (X-Ray/CT) located adjacent to ED; transport usually by techs but nurses may assist.
• Monitor techs staff the ED; RNs must read and interpret monitors.
• House supervisor available 24/7; charge nurse present on day shift.

Orientation

• Department-specific orientation includes 2 shifts (12 hours each).
• Additional HR onboarding for badge and credentials.

Additional Notes

• No separate fast track area; all patients intermixed in the ED.
• Triage area exists but travelers typically do not staff triage.
• Behavioral health patients cared for within the ED’s 24 beds, including 4 safe rooms.
• Security is in-house 24/7 and readily available near the ED.
• First-time travelers are welcome. Prior travel experience is not required.
