Registered Nurse (Neuro Med-Surg Acute) - Illinois
Location
- Peoria, Illinois
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Unit Details
- Neuro Med-Surg Acute unit with 54 beds (mostly semi-private)
- Common patient diagnoses: stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Nurse aides/patient care tech ratios:
- Day/evening: 1:9-10
- Night: 1:10-12
- Telemetry monitors (Phillips brand) are house-wide; nurses do not read their own strips
- Respiratory equipment: High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare); RNs troubleshoot only
Shift & Scheduling
- 12-hour night shifts
- Approximately 36 hours per week
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
- Holiday requirement: every other holiday
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating: Rotates with general unit staff; travelers float to general unit floor; if floated outside general unit, only assigned tasks within competency and with trained nurse support
Orientation & Training
- 2-day unit-specific orientation including computer training and precepted patient care
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Illinois
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum of 1 year Med Surg experience, with Med Surg experience within the last year
- One completed travel nursing assignment
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients
- Experience titrating a heparin drip based on PTT (heparin gtt)
Clinical Responsibilities
- RNs required to titrate drips (e.g., heparin)
- Charge nurse present 24/7; generally does not take patient assignment unless short-staffed
- House supervisor available 24/7
Dress Code & Policies
- No specific scrub color requirement
- Tattoos must be covered while on duty
- No piercings allowed except ears
- Drug-free campus; negative drug screen required
- Active Illinois nursing license required or proof that application process has started
Additional Notes
- Call-off policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty or pay requirement
- Local clinicians receive adjusted rates (not included here)
- Must provide requested time off during submission process
