Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (Operating Room)
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (10:30 AM – 11:00 PM)
  • On-Call: Up to 2 weekend call shifts per month (7 AM–7 PM or 7 PM–7 AM)
  • Holiday Work: Required to work at least one holiday period (Christmas and New Year's)
  • Floating: Must float within scope to meet facility needs, including between like units or sister facilities
  • Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks; called off hours can be combined to equal 1 shift

Facility Highlights

  • Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet designated hospital
  • 21 Operating Room suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, and Robotics
  • Nursing team: 75% RNs trained to scrub and circulate, 25% Certified Surgical Technologists
  • Charting system: EPIC
  • Parking: $20 registration fee for garage hang tag; additional fees may apply for other parking locations
  • Note: During hurricane season (June–November, peak in August and September), all staff may be assigned to emergency response teams

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in South Carolina
  • Minimum 1 year of Operating Room (OR) experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Radiation Badge
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Copy of Driver’s License/State ID
  • Copy of Social Security Card or SSN verification
  • Completed and accurate I-9 form with work eligibility attestation
  • Annual background check covering last 7 years, including SSN trace, state and national criminal checks, sex offender registry, and FACIS 3
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education verification or diploma/transcripts as placeholder
  • South Carolina Medicaid Excluded Providers search (for sub vendors)
  • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Complete employment application/resume including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
  • Verification of last 3 clinical employers (or all if fewer than 3)

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Initial physical exam, updated annually, attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually (specific mask models required)
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or vaccination series with boosters if needed
    • Hepatitis B: titer, vaccine series, or declination
    • Varicella: positive titer or vaccination series with boosters if needed
  • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
  • Annual TB questionnaire
  • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Aug 1 – Mar 31) with documentation uploaded prior to deadline
  • COVID vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated

Certifications & Competencies

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required
  • Color blindness testing required prior to start
  • Competency exam for OR nursing required
  • Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., ACLS for critical care units, TNCC for trauma units) – confirm with recruiter/unit

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Completion of orientation modules and OurDay platform training prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
  • Clear, passport-style badge photo required before start
  • Radiation badge process must be completed before starting floor duties; badges may take 5-7 days to arrive
  • Travelers must upload COVID and flu vaccine documentation into the facility’s system
  • Local radius: 60 miles; local candidates considered on a case-by-case basis

Additional Notes

  • Block scheduling accommodations require manager approval and depend on unit needs
  • Facility may restrict Return to Office (RTO) offers based on needs; all RTO requests must be submitted with application
  • Parking permit required for garage use; additional parking fees may apply elsewhere
  • Travelers should consider hurricane season assignments before confirming contracts
