Description
Registered Nurse - Med/Surg
Location: Olney, Illinois
Employment Type: Clinical Nursing
Shift: Night (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 (12-hour shifts)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Perform nursing duties within the scope of med/surg unit practice.
- Conduct initial patient assessments and develop individualized care plans.
- Implement and modify nursing interventions based on ongoing patient evaluation.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of nursing care.
- Administer therapies including IV access (peripheral and central lines), IM and SQ injections.
- Assist with unit procedures and equipment such as chest tube management, sequential compression devices, blood glucose monitoring, PCA machines, thoracentesis, paracentesis, TPN, thrombolytic therapy, kangaroo pump, and central line insertion.
- Respond effectively to emergency situations across all age groups (neonatal to geriatric).
- Promote patient satisfaction through patient rounding, bedside reporting, and use of patient whiteboards.
- Delegate tasks to healthcare team members and validate completion.
- Provide medications following the "5 Rights" (right patient, medication, route, dose, time).
- Ensure patient safety with fall precautions, pressure ulcer prevention, isolation precautions, and ambulation safety.
- Use critical thinking and nursing judgment to identify and act on changes in patient condition.
- Communicate effectively within the interdisciplinary healthcare team to coordinate care and ensure patient safety.
- Maintain a positive, professional attitude to foster a healthy work and healing environment.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Illinois.
- Minimum 1 year of Med Surg nursing experience within the last year.
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
Skills & Competencies
- Nursing assessment, care planning, and nursing interventions.
- Patient care procedures including medication administration.
- IV access (peripheral and central lines including PICC and Infusaport).
- Injections: intramuscular (IM) and subcutaneous (SQ).
- Management of chest tubes and use of sequential compression devices.
- Operation of blood glucose monitors, PCA machines, and kangaroo pumps.
- Performing thoracentesis, paracentesis, TPN administration, and thrombolytic therapy.
- Emergency response skills across all patient age groups.
- Patient rounding, bedside shift reporting, and effective communication.
- Fall prevention, pressure ulcer prevention, isolation precautions, and ambulation safety.
- Critical thinking and interdisciplinary collaboration.

- No on-call responsibilities.
- Focus on patient safety and satisfaction is a priority.
