Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Oncology Registered Nurse

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks


Job Description

  • Work on a mixed acuity PCU and MS unit specializing in oncology and bone marrow transplant (BMT) patients.
  • Shifts: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM to 7:30 AM). Rotating day/night shifts possible with 12-hour rotations.
  • Patient diagnoses include various hematologic malignancies and disorders such as:
    • Acute and Chronic Leukemias (ALL, AML, CLL, CML)
    • Amyloidosis, Aplastic Anemia
    • Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
    • Multiple Myeloma, Myelodysplastic Syndrome, Myeloproliferative Disorders
  • Special procedures include:
    • Autologous, Syngeneic, and Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplants
    • CAR-T Therapy

Required Experience & Skills

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
  • Minimum 1 year of oncology nursing experience within the last year.
  • Medical-Surgical nursing experience.
  • Competency in interpretation of dysrhythmias.
  • Experience with use of Rapid Response Teams.
  • PICC line management skills.
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.

Required Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA Instructor/Provider or RQI acceptable).
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually.
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required prior to start.
  • Background checks including 7-year criminal background, FBI/BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific), and education accreditation verification.
  • Physical exam documentation within 1 year of start confirming good health and freedom from contagious disease.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start.
  • Immunizations or titers required:
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) – 2 vaccines or positive titer
    • Varicella – 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions require documentation)
    • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending tests allowed).

Preferred Certifications

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
  • Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy Certification (not required).

Additional Requirements

  • Must complete unit-specific competency exams.
  • Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership.
  • Employment application and skills checklist required.
  • Compliance with facility dress code and hand hygiene policies.
  • Completion of fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate prior to start and annually thereafter.
  • Annual acknowledgment of ethics and compliance policies.
  • Monthly monitoring through workforce screening systems (EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG).

Notes

  • Shift assignments are reviewed every 4 weeks but are subject to staffing needs and may change.
  • Candidates must be graduates of accredited nursing programs (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
  • Fingerprinting must be completed using Ohio-specific codes and within 1 year of start; new fingerprinting required if there is a break in service over 90 days.
  • Candidates with positive background or fingerprint hits must provide additional documentation for adjudication.

This position is ideal for experienced oncology RNs with strong medical-surgical and telemetry skills who are comfortable working night shifts in a specialized transplant and oncology unit.
