Description

Registered Nurse – Oncology (Travel/Contract)

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks


Job Overview

  • 12-hour shifts, rotating day and night (7:00 AM–7:30 PM / 7:00 PM–7:30 AM), scheduled in 3-shift blocks per week (36 hours/week)
  • Shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks; may include days, nights, or combination based on staffing needs
  • Patient population primarily includes oncology patients with:
    • Continuous cardiac monitoring related to chemotherapy
    • Soft tissue malignancies requiring diagnostics, chemotherapy, and symptom management
    • Symptom management related to disease progression and treatment
    • Management of comorbidities
  • Strong emphasis on infection prevention protocols and fall prevention

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
  • Minimum 2 years of oncology nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system
  • Ability to interpret dysrhythmias
  • Proficient in arterial line management
  • Skilled in central line and PICC line care and management
  • Experience assisting with chest tube insertion and removal
  • Competent in managing high flow nasal cannula (HFNC)
  • Ability to interpret arterial blood gases (ABGs)

Clinical Skills & Competencies

  • Dysrhythmia interpretation
  • Accessing and managing ports, arterial lines, central lines, and PICC lines
  • Blood product administration
  • IV starts
  • Assisting with chest tube insertion/removal
  • Management of high flow nasal cannula (HFNC)
  • Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs)

Equipment Used

  • B450 monitors with GE telemetry system
  • Bladder scanner
  • Alaris infusion pumps
  • Stryker beds

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide check, sex offender registry, and motor vehicle record if driving is required
  • FBI and BCI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start, with specific Ohio codes and procedures
  • Education verification: Graduate of an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA accreditation required)
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
  • Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending at start

Certifications & Exams

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – AHA provider or instructor level only
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – check unit-specific requirements; AHA provider or instructor level only
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and annually thereafter (minimum passing score 76%)
  • Unit-specific competency exams required
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required prior to start
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., NIH Stroke Certification, PALS, NRP, EFM) – verify per assignment

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
  • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 1 year or chest x-ray if positive; TB questionnaire required annually
  • Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12) required; exemptions not allowed for those working with infants or pregnant patients
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters required if low titer and no vaccine proof
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions require documentation
  • Hepatitis B: Titer or 3-vaccine series; signed declination acceptable
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1–3/31); decliners must wear masks
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene)
  • Fit mask test required annually for inpatient/patient-facing roles starting 7/13/2026; onsite fit testing available if needed
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended

Additional Requirements

  • Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership (charge RN acceptable as second reference)
  • Employment application required, including education verification for nursing candidates
  • Skills checklist required
  • Compliance with dress code and hand hygiene policies
  • Annual acknowledgment of ethics, compliance, and fraud/waste/abuse training and reporting mechanisms

Work Environment & Notes

  • Heavy focus on infection prevention and patient safety
  • Floating to other units with similar or lower acuity may be required
  • Telemetry monitoring equipment used extensively; familiarity with cardiac monitoring essential
