Registered Nurse – Oncology Acute

Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Overview

• 19 private beds
• Patient population includes all types of cancer (commonly lymphoma and leukemia), hematology, medical patients, radiation oncology, and gynecologic oncology
• Staffing ratios:

  • Days: typically 1:5 (can vary 1:4-5)
  • Nights: typically 1:6 (can vary 1:5-6)
  • 1:1 staffing for specific medications/therapies as needed
• Charge Nurse present 24/7; may occasionally take patient assignments
• House supervisor available 24/7
• Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) support the unit:

  • 3 PCTs from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM
  • 2 PCTs from 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM

Work Schedule

• 12-hour shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM or 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
• Night shift available for this role
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend (days: Sat/Sun; nights: Fri/Sat)
• Holiday requirement: every other holiday
• No call or standby requirement
• Self-scheduling with coordination for time-off requests
• Floating required as part of unit rotation; float shifts are 4+ hours

Required Certifications & Licenses

• Active Illinois RN license (or application in process)
• BLS (AHA) certification
• ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate

Experience & Skills

• Experience administering IV chemotherapy and immunotherapy regimens, including handling precautions (PPE) and monitoring for side effects
• Familiarity with Epic Beacon EMR documentation system
• No requirement for RN to titrate drips; medication adjustments require physician orders
• Common set-rate drips include heparin and chemotherapy (e.g., 24-hour Methotrexate bags)

Equipment & Technology

• Use of Phillips telemetry monitors; RNs are not required to interpret strips
• Respiratory therapy manages BiPAP and CPAP; RNs assist with CPAP only if part of patient’s home regimen

Orientation & Other Notes

• Unit-specific orientation: 24-36 hours (non-billable)
• Drug-free workplace; negative drug screen required for all panels
• Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius of the facility
