Respiratory Therapist II - Pediatrics
Location: Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Employment Type: Clinical-Allied
Shift: Days
Hours per Week: 36 (12-hour shifts)
Contract Length: 14 weeks
Job Summary
Provide advanced respiratory care to pediatric patients under department policies and procedures. Deliver competent care including airway management, mechanical ventilation, oxygen and aerosol therapy, and respiratory treatments to assess, prevent, stabilize, or remedy respiratory dysfunction.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer standard respiratory care: aerosol medication delivery, bedside pulmonary function testing, breathing exercises, oxygen therapy, arterial punctures.
- Manage airway care: aspiration of established airways, tracheostomy care and tube changes, endotracheal intubations and extubations.
- Perform pulmonary function testing as needed.
- Transport pediatric and neonatal patients per protocol when working with specialized air care teams.
- Perform advanced respiratory procedures as authorized, including umbilical artery/vein catheterization, IV insertion, chest tube insertion, needle decompression, arterial blood gases (ABGs), and blood glucose monitoring.
- Manage extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for cardiac and respiratory support when applicable.
- Provide comprehensive ventilator care: setup, function verification, specialized ventilator modes, patient monitoring, and weaning techniques.
- May be required to be on-call during days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Maintain and improve job knowledge and skills; function independently with minimal supervision; serve as a resource to other staff.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret clinical information and technical procedures.
- Proficient in documenting clinical information accurately.
- Effective communication skills with patients, physicians, family members, and staff.
- Strong mathematical skills including fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
- Strong reasoning ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret a wide variety of technical situations.
- Valid Respiratory Therapist license appropriate for practice in North Carolina.
Additional Information
- This role requires working independently and may involve on-call duties.
- Experience with pediatric and neonatal respiratory care is essential.
- Advanced respiratory procedures and ECMO management experience are beneficial.
