Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – Emergency Room (ER)
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Work in a Level 1 Trauma Emergency Department with 65 all-private beds and 2 trauma bays.
- Nurse-to-patient ratios range from 1:3 to 1:5 depending on patient acuity.
- Care for a wide variety of patients, from newborns to elderly, including critically ill, cardiac arrest, stroke, heart attack, and trauma patients.
- Trauma patients are initially managed by a specialized trauma team; travelers typically care for stabilized trauma patients outside the trauma bay.
- 12-hour day shifts; scheduling managed by the scheduling manager with some flexibility for time-off requests and block scheduling.
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend on rotation; holiday shifts every other or as needed (negotiable).
- No call or standby requirements for travelers.
- Occasional rare floating to assist other units as a "help all," but not expected to take charge on other units.
Required Certifications & Skills
- Current Illinois RN license or proof that application process has started.
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, and either ENPC or PALS, plus TNCC or TNS.
- Proficiency in titrating various drips, including vasopressors, cardiac drips, and antihypertensives.
- Ability to interpret cardiac rhythms and recognize life-threatening arrhythmias (ACLS required).
- Experience preferred: minimum 2 years of nursing experience and at least 1 prior travel assignment.
- SANE RN experience preferred.
- Experience working in a teaching hospital with residents preferred.
Work Environment & Team
- ED staffed with a minimum of 3 attending physicians at all times.
- Two charge nurses per shift: one manages incoming patients and telemetry, the other manages department needs; charge nurses may assist as second nurse in trauma or critical cases.
- 24/7 house supervisor present.
- ED techs support nursing staff with a ratio of approximately 1 tech per 9 patients.
- Respiratory therapists handle ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow oxygen; RNs assist with troubleshooting.
- Telemetry monitors (Phillips brand) used; nurses expected to interpret monitor strips.
- Radiology staff or transport personnel handle X-rays and CT scans.
- Nurses and techs draw labs; phlebotomy may draw labs for boarders.
Orientation & Policies
- Orientation includes 12 non-billable hours.
- Drug-free campus policy; negative drug screen required for all panels.
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius of the facility.
- Call-off policy allows up to 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty.
Scheduling Details
- Shifts: 12 hours, primarily day shifts starting between 7 AM and 9 AM.
- Mid shifts and night shifts available but travelers are not on rotating day/night schedules.
- Weekend shifts for 7 AM–7 PM are Friday/Saturday; other shifts cover Saturday/Sunday.
Dress Code
- No specific scrub color required; tasteful solid-colored shirts under scrubs preferred.
Summary of Requirements
