Travel Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical
Location: Battle Creek, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Work primarily on a 10-bed ER Overflow Observation Unit with rapid patient admissions and discharges.
- Typical nurse-to-patient ratio during the day is 1:4-5; can go up to 1:7 when working as an RN/LPN team.
- Floating to other Medical Surgical units approximately once per week, depending on need.
- Must be willing to work with a variety of staff including RNs, LPNs, and Techs.
- Weekend schedule: every other weekend required.
- No holiday time off requests allowed; dates may be discussed with manager based on unit needs.
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM).
- Patient population includes a mix of medical patients on Med/Surg units.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan.
- Minimum 1 year of Medical Surgical nursing experience within the last year.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Previous travel nursing experience.
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID).
- Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search from age 18, with multiple components (SSN trace, national/statewide searches, education verification, etc.).
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks.
- Michigan LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start.
- Education verification with copy of highest degree or diploma.
- Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps.
- One professional reference from a supervisor or manager.
- Skills checklist updated annually for applicable unit.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start.
- Drug testing: 10-panel including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start.
- Immunizations and health documents:
- Proof of Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine (at least one prior Tdap).
- Negative TB test (PPD or equivalent) within 30 days of start or chest x-ray if positive.
- Annual TB questionnaire.
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 vaccines or positive titer each).
- Hepatitis B (titer, series, or facility declination).
- Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer).
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/spiritual exemption (for candidates starting after Nov 1).
- Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment required.
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam completed within 1 year prior to assignment start with passing score of at least 80%.
Additional Notes
- Block scheduling cannot be guaranteed or approved at this time.
- Fit testing is required if working onsite; appointment must be scheduled and documented.
- Candidates must be flexible to float to other Med/Surg units as needed.
- Holiday time off requests are generally not approved due to unit needs.
This position is ideal for experienced travel RNs with ER or Med/Surg background who are comfortable working night shifts and floating between units.
