Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Operating Room Registered Nurse
  • Shift: Day shift, 4x10-hour shifts (6:45 AM – 5:15 PM)
  • Rooms: 23 operating rooms
  • Weekend Requirement: 1 weekend shift per month
  • On-Call: Yes, approximately 1 time per week (may be less frequent)
  • Floating: Rarely, only within skill set to meet facility needs
  • Block Scheduling: Not accommodated
  • Local Candidates: Not accepted; must live at least 50 miles from facility

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 3 years of Operating Room nursing experience
  • First-time travelers not accepted (prior travel experience required)
  • General OR and Level I Trauma experience required
  • Experience with Cerner electronic charting preferred
  • Must have experience with all service lines except Cardiovascular (CV)
  • Required case experience includes:
    • Bariatric: Laparoscopic assisted cases
    • General Surgery: Appendectomy, Cholecystectomy, Colon resection, Hernia repair (inguinal/umbilical), Laparoscopic assisted procedures, Mastectomy, Partial/total Thyroidectomy, Whipple procedure
    • Neurology: Cervical fusion, Craniotomy, Laminectomy/discectomy, Lumbar fusion
    • Orthopedic: Arthroscopy, Carpal Tunnel release, Closed and Open reduction of fractures
    • Plastic Surgery: Free Flap - Microvascular
    • Transplant: Organ donation
    • Urology: Cystoscopy, Nephrectomy, Prostatectomy
    • Trauma: Amputations, Gunshot/stab wounds, Motor vehicle accident (multiple injuries)
  • Emergency management skills including code response, fire safety, latex allergy management, and malignant hyperthermia
  • Equipment experience: Electrosurgical units, fiber optic light sources/cords, Hana tables
  • Professional knowledge: Administration of blood products, infection control, radiation safety, specimen handling/labeling, Universal Protocol (Time out) procedure, urinary bladder catheterization

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois
  • Minimum 3 years of Operating Room (OR) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Trauma experience

  • Acute Care Hospital with 562 staffed beds
  • Level I Trauma Center
  • Magnet designated hospital
  • Charting system: Cerner
  • Scrub color provided
  • Parking permit required, no cost

Additional Notes

  • All requested time off must be approved by manager
  • Up to 36 hours of call-off allowed per 13-week assignment without pay obligation
  • Badge photo required within one week of contract signing
  • Mandatory completion of computer-based learning modules before orientation
  • Candidates must comply with Illinois-specific background and registry checks, including fingerprinting within Illinois

This position is ideal for experienced Operating Room RNs with prior travel contract experience seeking a challenging role in a Level I trauma, Magnet-designated acute care hospital.
