Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (Operating Room)
  • Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:30 AM – 7:00 PM)
  • On-Call: Yes, up to 4 call shifts every 4 weeks
  • Weekend Requirement: Up to 1 weekend shift every 4 weeks
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work at least one holiday period (Christmas Dec 24-26, New Year's Dec 31-Jan 1)
  • Floating: Required to float within scope to meet facility needs, including between like units/sister facilities

Facility Highlights

  • Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet designated hospital
  • Main Operating Room with 21 OR suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, and Robotics
  • Nursing team: 75% RNs trained to both scrub and circulate surgical procedures
  • Charting system: EPIC
  • Parking: $20 registration fee for garage hang tag; additional fees may apply for other parking locations
  • Note: During hurricane season (June-November), all staff may be assigned to emergency response teams

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in South Carolina
  • Minimum 1 year of Operating Room (OR) experience, with OR experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Schedule & Work Conditions

  • Block scheduling possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
  • Local candidates accepted on a case-by-case basis
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks; called off hours can be combined to equal 1 shift

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background Checks:
    • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
    • Includes SSN trace, statewide and national criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS 3, and international searches if applicable
  • Employment Verification: Last 3 clinical employers verified; attestation letters accepted only if other verification methods exhausted
  • Education Verification: Required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if needed
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Licensure Verification: Primary source verification required; NURSYS verification for RNs
  • Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start; no instant tests accepted
  • Photo for Badge: Clear, passport-style photo with solid light background, frontal view, business casual attire, no hats or sunglasses

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Initial and annual physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Fit Mask Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually; specific mask models required
  • Immunizations & Titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or chest x-ray if prior positive
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series; boosters required for low titers
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
    • Seasonal Flu Vaccine: Required during flu season (Aug 1 - Mar 31); medical/religious exemptions accepted but no declinations
  • COVID-19 Vaccination: Not required but highly preferred; vaccination records must be uploaded or declination form completed
  • Other: Annual TB questionnaire required

Certifications & Competencies

  • Competency exams required, including medication/pharmacology competency
  • Color blindness testing required prior to start
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) not required for ER RNs (not specifically required here)
  • Additional certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (verify with manager)

Additional Notes

  • Radiation badge process may take 5-7 days; candidates cannot start floor duties without badge
  • Travelers should be prepared for possible emergency response duties during hurricane season
  • Orientation modules and first day instructions will be provided after clearance; must be completed before orientation
  • Parking permit required for garage use; additional parking fees may apply elsewhere
