Registered Nurse – MICU (Columbus, Ohio)

Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Unit: Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
  • Shift: Night (3 shifts of 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Schedule: 12-hour day/night rotating shifts possible; shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks but not guaranteed
  • Patient Population: Adults and Geriatrics
  • Common Patient Diagnoses:
    • Oncologic emergencies
    • COPD, pneumonia, ARDS
    • Gastrointestinal bleed
    • Neuromuscular disease
    • Drug overdose
    • Pulmonary hypertension
    • Autoimmune disorders
    • Sepsis
  • Special Procedures/Unit Details:
    • Mechanical ventilation
    • Pulmonary artery catheter placement
    • Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
    • Arterial pressure and cardiac monitoring
    • Chest tubes, central venous catheters
    • Chemotherapy administration
    • Complex medication regimens and clinical trials
    • Plasmapheresis
    • Bronchoscopy and endoscopy for pulmonary and GI conditions

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), with at least some experience within the last year
  • Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Proficiency with Epic electronic medical record system

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific code 3701.881)
  • Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start
  • Required health documents:
    • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and no contagious disease
    • Immunizations and titers: Tdap, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year, plus annual TB questionnaire
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season (10/1 – 3/31)
  • Fit mask test required annually for inpatient/patient-facing roles (valid for entire assignment length)
  • Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and annually thereafter
  • Background check and fingerprinting results must be clear before start; pending fingerprint attestations accepted under specific conditions

Additional Requirements

  • 2 professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership (charge nurse acceptable as second reference)
  • Employment application and skills checklist required
  • Unit-specific competency exams including medication/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (EKG exam must be completed within 1 year of start and updated annually)

  • Computerized charting using EPIC system
  • Parking options available (costs apply)
  • Candidates must review and sign dress code and hand hygiene policies
  • Confidential Fraud Waste Abuse and Compliance Reporting Mechanism form required

This position is ideal for experienced critical care RNs with strong skills in ventilator management and complex ICU care who are seeking a travel contract in Ohio. First-time travel nurses are not eligible.
