Description
Registered Nurse – Neuro Med-Surg Acute
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 26 weeks (approximately 6 months)
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 48 hours per week
Unit Overview
- 54 beds (mostly semi-private)
- Patient types: Stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Charge nurse present 24/7 (usually does not take patient assignment unless short staffed)
- House supervisor available 24/7
- Nurse aides/patient care techs support the unit with ratios:
- Day/evening: 1:9-10
- Night: 1:10-12
- Telemetry monitors (Phillips brand) are used house-wide; nurses do not read their own strips
- Respiratory equipment: High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare); RNs troubleshoot only
Required Certifications & Skills
- Valid RN license in Illinois
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 1 year of Med Surg experience within the last year
- One completed travel assignment
- BLS issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients
- Prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit
- Neuro ICU experience
- Heparin titrated drip experience
Job Duties & Expectations
- RNs are required to titrate drips (e.g., heparin)
- Floating:
- Participate in float rotation with general unit staff
- If floated outside general unit, only perform skills within competency and with support from trained nurse
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (both Saturday and Sunday count as weekend shifts)
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
- No call or standby requirement
Orientation & Scheduling
- Orientation: 2 days unit-specific orientation with educator and preceptor
- Scheduling: 12-hour shifts, one shift per day, attempts made to accommodate requests; scheduling may be blocked based on staffing needs
Additional Information
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Drug-free workplace: Negative drug screen required for all panels
- Dress code: No scrub color requirement; tattoos must be covered; only ear piercings allowed
- Call-off policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty or pay obligation

- Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that application process has been initiated
