Registered Nurse – Stepdown Unit

Location: Cleveland, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Overview

• Work on a Stepdown unit with potential to float to similar patient care units including Emergency Department.
• Schedule: 3 shifts of 12 hours each (either day or night shifts). Shifts may rotate based on hospital needs.
• Must work at least every other holiday.

Required Experience

• Minimum 18 months combined permanent experience as a Registered Nurse in the specialty applied for.
• At least 18 months recent Stepdown or Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience; travel experience accepted.
• PCU/Progressive care experience preferred but not mandatory.

Required Licenses & Certifications

• Valid Ohio RN license or a Compact State RN license in hand.
• Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from AHA or American Red Cross (RQI acceptable).
• Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification from AHA or American Red Cross (RQI acceptable).
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification (AHA, Apex, AACME, or Bluecloud only; Healthstream certs not accepted).
• Must pass ECG rhythm recognition and SafeMedicate competency tests during orientation.

Orientation & Testing

• Baseline competency exams on medication administration (SafeMedicate) and ECG interpretation required at orientation.
• Passing scores: 90% for medication exam, 80% for ECG exam.
• Candidates unsuccessful on first attempt will receive remediation and retake opportunities.
• Not required for legacy candidates or agency flips with less than 6 months gap between contracts at this facility.

Health & Immunization Requirements

• Physical exam within 1 year confirming ability to safely perform job functions.
• Fit mask test (3M N95 1860 or 1870+) within 12 months, updated annually.
• Tdap vaccine every 10 years (declinations not accepted; medical/religious exemptions require approval).
• Negative TB test (2-step PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 12 months or chest X-ray if past positive TB.
• MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) immunity via 2 vaccines or positive titer; booster required if titers negative/equivocal.
• Varicella immunity via 2 vaccines or positive titer; booster required if titers negative/equivocal.
• Hepatitis B immunity or declination documentation.
• Seasonal flu vaccination required annually (no declinations accepted; exemptions require agency approval).
• Snellen eye exam within 1 year.
• Standard 10-panel drug screen within 12 months (instant drug screens not accepted).

Background & Screening

• Comprehensive background check including 7-year FCRA-compliant search, education verification, and fingerprinting (FBI and BCI) required.
• Fingerprinting must be completed within 48 hours of contract signing and updated annually.
• Candidates may start with fingerprint results pending if fingerprinting is completed prior to start.
• Ohio BCI/FBI fingerprint attestation required annually.

Documentation & Compliance

• Government-issued photo ID required and must be carried on assignment.
• Completion of facility-specific online onboarding modules prior to start (must be done on a computer using Google Chrome).
• Photo for badge required (headshot, shoulders up, white background).
• Employment application with 3 years prior work history including at least 2 years clinical acute care experience in a similar area.
• Two professional references from within one year of start date (manager, supervisor, charge nurse, or director).

Requirements/Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Ohio
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• Minimum 1.5 years of Stepdown nursing experience
• Stepdown experience within the last year
• Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
• Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

Additional Notes

• Candidates must be prepared to complete SafeMedicate and ECG rhythm recognition tests during orientation with acceptable scores.
• Modules and onboarding must be completed before clearance to start; facility will not assign modules until 2 weeks prior to start date.
• Candidates with a break in employment longer than 6 months at this facility may need to repeat orientation and modules.
• Candidates must use their legal name consistently across all documentation.

This position is ideal for experienced Stepdown RNs with recent progressive care experience and valid Ohio or Compact RN licensure, who are comfortable working 12-hour rotating shifts in a high-acuity hospital setting.
