Registered Nurse (RN) – Surgical Acute
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (7:30 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Day: 12
Hours per Week: 36
Unit Overview
- Department: Surgical Acute
- Unit Size: 63 beds (49 private, 9 observation)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Day shift: 4-5 patients per RN
- Night shift: 5-6 patients per RN
- Patient Types: Post-op surgical, trauma, overflow medical
- Common Care Tasks: Dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, central lines, TPN
- Respiratory Equipment: No ventilators; CPAP and high flow oxygen managed by RNs; respiratory therapists handle nebulizers; RNs manage inhalers and CPAP placement
- Telemetry: Some patients on telemetry with Phillips monitors; monitor techs read strips, RNs do not
Scheduling & Work Requirements
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
- Holiday Requirement: Rotate every other holiday
- Call/Standby: None
- Floating: Travelers float first, only to units matching their experience level; ICU RNs floating to general units take a team of 3 patients
- Orientation:
- 2 shifts with preceptor on unit
- 1 twelve-hour shift for EPIC and professional orientation with unit educator
- Dress Code: Any scrub color allowed; scrubs provided
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or proof of application in process
- BLS (AHA) certification
- Must pass a comprehensive drug screen (drug-free campus policy)
- Experience: Post-op patient care with strong critical thinking and teamwork skills
- No requirement for RNs to titrate drips except Heparin only
- Good bedside manner and ability to ask for help when needed
Additional Notes
- Call off policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty or pay obligation
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours (guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation)
- Nurse aids/patient care techs assist with vitals, accu checks, ADLs, turning, and ambulation; ratios vary by shift (7-10 patients per PCT days, 10-15 patients per PCT nights)
- Travelers do not self-schedule; block scheduling may be considered with prior approval
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius of the facility
