Operating Room Registered Nurse - Travel/Contract

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Operating Room Registered Nurse
  • Shift: Day shift, 4x10-hour shifts (06:45 AM - 5:15 PM)
  • Rooms: 23 operating rooms
  • Weekend Requirement: 1 weekend shift per month
  • On-call Requirement: 1 on-call shift per week (though infrequent)
  • Floating: Rare, only within skill set
  • Block Schedule: Not accommodated
  • Local Candidates: Not accepted; must live at least 50 miles from facility

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 3 years of Operating Room nursing experience
  • First-time travel nurses not accepted (prior travel experience required)
  • General OR and Level I Trauma experience required
  • Experience with Cerner charting preferred
  • Must have experience with all service lines except Cardiovascular (CV)
  • Case experience required in multiple surgical specialties:
    • Bariatric: Laparoscopic assisted cases
    • General Surgery: Appendectomy, Cholecystectomy, Colon resection, Hernia repair (inguinal/umbilical), Laparoscopic assisted procedures, Mastectomy, Partial/total Thyroidectomy, Whipple procedure
    • Neurology: Cervical fusion, Craniotomy, Laminectomy/discectomy, Lumbar fusion
    • Orthopedics: Arthroscopy, Carpal Tunnel release, Closed and Open reduction of fractures
    • Plastic Surgery: Free Flap - Microvascular
    • Transplant: Organ donation
    • Urology: Cystoscopy, Nephrectomy, Prostatectomy
    • Trauma: Amputations, Gunshot/stab wounds, Motor vehicle accident (multiple injuries)
  • Emergency management skills: Code response, Fire safety, Latex allergy management, Malignant Hyperthermia
  • Equipment/Instrumentation experience: Electrosurgical units, Fiber optic light sources/cords, Hana tables
  • Professional knowledge: Administration of blood products, Infection control, Radiation safety, Specimen handling/labeling, Universal Protocol (Time out) procedure, Urinary bladder catheterization

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Active Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) license or in application process
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) preferred
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be required based on unit/specialty
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) may be required based on unit/specialty

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background checks within 30 days of start, including:
    • SSN Trace, National Criminal, Sex Offender, FACIS Level 3, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
  • Illinois-specific searches required within 30 days of start:
    • Department of Corrections Inmate Search
    • State Police Murderer and Violent Offender Against Youth Registry
    • Most Wanted Search
  • Fingerprinting through Illinois Health Care Worker Registry required for clinical candidates without an IL license; must be completed in Illinois 3 business days prior to start
  • Education verification required (official or unofficial transcripts accepted if pending)
  • Competency exam required for all clinical candidates
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by appropriate healthcare provider, confirming good physical and mental health and ability to perform job functions
  • Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted); cannot be completed onsite
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity required for:
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer)
    • Hepatitis B (vaccine series, positive titer, or signed declination)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
  • 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (negative dilute results require retest)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually by November 30
  • References: 2 professional references required for travel/contract clinical candidates
  • Badge photo required within one week of contract signing

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Illinois
  • Minimum 3 years of Operating Room (OR) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Completion of at least one prior travel nursing assignment
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Surgical case experience in:
    • General Surgery: Appendectomy, Cholecystectomy, Colon resection, Hernia repair (inguinal/umbilical), Laparoscopic assisted procedures, Mastectomy, Partial/total Thyroidectomy, Whipple procedure
    • Orthopedics: Arthroscopy, Carpal Tunnel release, Closed reduction of fractures, Open reduction of fractures
    • Bariatric surgery (laparoscopic assisted cases)
    • Neurology cases (e.g., cervical fusion, craniotomy, laminectomy/discectomy, lumbar fusion)
  • Experience with organ donation procedures
  • Proficiency in malignant hyperthermia management
  • Skilled in operation of electrosurgical units, fiber optic light sources/cords, and Hana tables

  • All requested time off must be approved by manager
  • Client may cancel up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment without pay obligation; on-call shifts count as called-off shifts
  • Scrub color provided
  • Parking permit required but no cost for parking
  • Charting system: Cerner
  • Facility is a Level I Trauma Center and Magnet-designated acute care hospital with 562 staffed beds
