Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse – Med Surg Manager
Location: Saint Peter, Minnesota
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Overview
Seeking an interim Med Surg Nurse Manager to lead and manage the medical-surgical department through a period of change and improvement. The role requires a proactive change agent to oversee nursing standards, staff development, and patient care quality.
Work Schedule
- Shift: Days
- Hours: 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week
Required Qualifications
- Current Registered Nurse license in Minnesota
- Graduate of an accredited nursing school; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
- Previous experience in Medical-Surgical nursing required (minimum years of experience not explicitly stated, assume at least standard Med Surg experience)
- Certifications required:
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Completion of Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) within 18 months of hire
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively and build rapport with healthcare team members
- Commitment to maintaining clinical competency in Med Surg patient care
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain nursing care standards and implement hospital policies and procedures
- Ensure individualized, comprehensive care plans for each patient
- Collaborate with healthcare team to provide evidence-based nursing care for optimal patient outcomes
- Oversee accurate shift handoffs and communication of patient status among staff and providers
- Coordinate staff education and competency development in collaboration with Education Specialist and Chief Nursing Officer
- Review and update departmental policies and procedures annually
- Manage orientation and evaluation of new, travel, and agency staff readiness
- Create and adjust staff schedules to ensure safe patient care and compliance with staffing criteria
- Assist with procurement, inventory, and evaluation of equipment and supplies
- Participate in preventive maintenance and proper use of equipment
- Lead staff meetings and educational sessions regularly
- Support staff in patient admissions, transfers, discharges, and documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR)
- Facilitate patient/family education and coordinate care with ancillary departments
- Support nursing staff in managing IV fluids, blood products, medications, and related documentation
Additional Information
- Must complete required certifications and maintain compliance with continuing education and facility in-services
- Role involves leadership, staff development, and quality improvement initiatives within the Med Surg unit
