Registered Nurse — Surgical Acute

Location

• Peoria, Illinois

Contract

• 13 weeks
• 36 hours per week
• 12-hour night shifts

Required Qualifications

• Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that the application process has been initiated
• BLS certification

Unit Overview

• Surgical acute inpatient unit with 63 beds
• Common patient types include post-op surgical, trauma, overflow medical, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, central lines, and TPN

Key Responsibilities

• Provide post-op care
• Use critical thinking and ask for help when needed
• Maintain good bedside manner and work as a team player
• Manage inhalers and place patients on CPAP when needed

Schedule

• Every other weekend
• Rotates every other holiday
• Travelers do not self-schedule
• Block scheduling may be considered if approved at the time of contract

Unit Details

• No RN drip titration required
• Heparin is the only common titratable/set-rate drip
• Charge nurses are present on each shift and do not take an assignment
• Patient care techs assist with vitals, accu checks, ADLs, turning, and ambulation
• Some patients are on telemetry; bedside RNs do not read strips
• No vents on the unit
• Travelers float first to units with the same level of experience
• No call or standby requirement

Orientation

• 2 shifts with a preceptor
• 1 additional 12-hour shift for orientation and EPIC training with the unit educator

Additional Notes

• Local placements are accepted within a 50-mile radius
• Negative drug screen required
• Any scrub color is allowed
