Emergency Room RN

Overview

• 13-week assignment in Macomb, Illinois
• 12-hour night shifts
• Every other weekend and every other holiday
• Occasional floating to task
• 36 hours per week

Required Qualifications

• Current Illinois RN license
• BLS
• ACLS
• PALS
• SANE
• Experience with hard work and reliability is noted as a must-have

Unit Details

• Emergency Department / ER
• 11 beds/trauma bays
• Not trauma level designated
• Not a STEMI or Stroke center
• No fast track
• 1 triage room, not staffed separately; used only when patient rooms are full
• Holds are intermixed in the ER; ER RNs manage holds
• 2 safe behavioral health rooms, not separate from other ER rooms
• Security is in-house, but not 24/7
• Average volume is 40 patients per day
• Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3 or 1:4

Clinical Support and Workflow

• 24/7 physician coverage
• 12-hour NP coverage
• Charge nurse takes a patient load
• House supervisor after 3 pm daily
• ER Techs provide 24/7 coverage
• PRN sitters are available, but agency staff might be required to sit
• RT tasks include ABGs, intubation, EKGs, and breathing treatments
• Equipment includes vent, CPAP, BiPAP, and Vapotherm
• Tele monitors use Nihon Koden; RNs read strips
• ER Techs and ER secretary are tele trained
• Portable x-ray is available; transport is by radiology unless STAT stroke head CT, when ER staff transport and monitor
• Phlebotomy draws after RN IV stick attempts; Steri-path is used for blood culture draws

Schedule and Orientation

• 12-hour shifts
• Every other weekend and holiday
• Scheduling uses a 6-week schedule with various due dates on R/O
• Call is not required, but open call shifts may be available
• Orientation is usually the first week, 1:1 with the department clinical care coordinator, and varies based on experience with EMR/department
