NICU Registered Nurse (RN)

Overview

• Location: Carmichael, California (near Sacramento)
• Contract length: 13 weeks (travel)
• Shift: Days, 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
• Unit: NICU, Level 3, 26-30 beds (cares for babies only)
• Patient mix: Respiratory failure and preterm infants. No cardiac surgery or defect repair.

Required Qualifications

• 2 years of experience
• Active BLS certification (AHA)
• Active NRP certification (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
• Active California RN license

Preferred Qualifications

• Pediatric experience

Application Requirements

• Copy of driver's license at submittal. Name must match a government-issued ID, with no middle initial or middle name.
• Two supervisor references at submittal: one within the past 12 months and one within the past 3 years worked.
• Not directly employed within the past year by any facility in the associated health system group. Candidates employed PRN through outside firms are considered.

Schedule

• Shift starts at 6:45 AM. Report is at the bedside.
• Every other weekend.
• Works 2 of 3 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's). Holidays rotate with core staff. Holiday time off is considered but not guaranteed.
• Overtime and extra shifts are available.
• Self-scheduling is used but is finalized by the manager. Schedules are posted 4 weeks in advance. Travelers can view schedules remotely, pick up extra shifts, and trade shifts.
• Block scheduling is generally not available.

Floating

• May float to all other facilities in the Sacramento area. Mid-shift float to another facility is rare but can happen.
• First to float.

Orientation

• Floor-specific orientation: 1-2 days on the floor with a preceptor.

Unit Support

• Charge nurse generally does not take patients but provides break relief.
• Nurse aides are available as census and staffing dictate.
• Ventilators are used.
• Hospitalist or intensivist is in house.
• Respiratory therapy is available 24/7.
• Pharmacy is available 24/7.
• No IV team.

Dress Code

• Navy scrubs. Under shirts must be navy, white, or black.
• Scrub jackets are optional and must be navy.

• The hospital is designated "Baby Friendly" and offers excellent breastfeeding support.
