Job Overview: MS/Tele/Peds RN

Location

  • City: Devils Lake, North Dakota
  • Facility: St Alexius Health Devils Lake Hospital

Contract Details

  • Contract Length: 13 weeks

Department Information

  • Department: Med/Tele/Peds RN
  • Unit Type: Medsurg/Peds unit (No ICU, but may take Tele or ICU acuity patients)
  • Number of Beds: 25 (max census in recent months: 12-14 patients)

Patient Care

  • Nurse-Patient Ratios:
    • Days: 1:4-5
    • Nights: 1:5-6
    • Critical patients: 1:1 or 1:2
  • Common Diagnoses/Types of Patients:
    • Pediatrics to Geriatrics
    • Wide variety of illnesses/injuries, both chronic and acute
    • Common admissions: respiratory diagnoses, infectious diseases, GI issues, ETOH intoxication/withdrawal, liver disease, AKI, DM, DKA, swingbed/rehab, occasional social admits

Required Experience and Skills

  • Experience: Minimum of 1 year required; previous travel experience preferred
  • Skills: Wide skill set required due to patient age and diagnoses
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS
    • ACLS
    • PALS
  • Titration of Drips: Yes, RNs must be able to titrate drips (e.g., Insulin, Lasix, Cardizem, Heparin, etc.)

Staffing and Support

  • Charge Nurse: No, but a house supervisor/coordinator is available
  • Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs: Yes, 1:12 ratio
  • RT Equipment Available: Bipap, Vent, Glidescope, Heated high flow, bubble c-pap, standard oxygen supplies

Scheduling and Requirements

  • Shifts: 7a, 7p, 7p-7a, rotating days and nights (no guaranteed blocked scheduling)
  • Weekend Requirement: Minimum of 2 out of 6 weekends; may be asked to fill in as needed
  • Holiday Requirement: Yes, with advance notice for RTO
  • Call/Standby Requirement: No call, but OT opportunities available
  • Floating Requirements: May be asked to assist in other departments as needed, within scope of practice

Orientation

  • Unit/Department Specific Orientation: Minimum of 2 days

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must not be employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit, including CHI and/or Dignity.
  • RTO must be provided upfront (7 or fewer days per 13-week contract); additional RTO will not be approved after submission.
