Labor and Delivery RN - Health Good Samaritan, Kearney, Nebraska

Unit and Facility Details

  • Facility: Health Good Samaritan
  • Location: Kearney, Nebraska
  • Unit: Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP)
  • Beds: 16 LDRP rooms
  • OR Suites on Unit: 1 OR room for C-sections
  • Births: Approximately 35 per month
  • Level II NICU on site (care for babies about 32 weeks and up)
  • 24/7 Neonatal NP coverage and neonatal transport available
  • Certified Lactation Consultants on staff
  • Massage therapy offered to patients

Shift and Scheduling

  • Shift: 12-hour night shifts (06:30 PM to 06:30 AM)
  • Schedule: Self-scheduling with charge nurse; manager approval required
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: Rotating holidays; travelers may work holidays during assignment
  • Floating: Occasionally float to NICU for feeder/grower babies if needed (not mandatory)

Patient Care and Ratios

  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • Laboring mothers: 1:1
    • Mother-baby care: 1:3
  • Common patient types: Obstetrical patients including labor, delivery, postpartum, and newborn care
  • Common drips and protocols: Oxytocin, magnesium, Cytotec, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), hypertension protocols

Team and Support

  • Charge nurse present on each shift and takes patient assignments
  • 24/7 OB tech coverage on unit
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) system: Novii

Requirements and Certifications

  • Certifications required: BLS, NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • C-EFM certification preferred
  • RN candidates must pass a 90% score on an open-book skills exam during orientation (fail results in termination)
  • Valid driver’s license required to verify candidate location within 50-mile radius

Contract Details

  • Assignment length: 13 weeks
  • Hours: 36 hours per week contract available
  • Radius rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any CommonSpirit-associated facility (including CHI or Dignity)
  • Return to work (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO extensions allowed

This position is ideal for experienced LDRP nurses comfortable with a busy obstetrical unit, including labor, delivery, postpartum, and newborn care, who meet the certification and location requirements.
