Travel RN Opportunity – Progressive Care Unit (PCU)

Location: Summit Medical Center, Hermitage, Tennessee

Unit Overview

• Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
• Beds:

  • Unit 630: 34 beds
  • Unit 633: 25 beds
• Patient Ratios:

  • Days: 1:4 to 1:5
  • Nights: 1:5 to 1:6
• Staffing:

  • Unit secretaries and tech availability
  • 3 techs on unit 630 when full
  • 2 techs on unit 633 when full
• Equipment:

  • Bipaps, high flow oxygen, Vapotherm
  • Alaris pumps
  • Cardiac, heparin, and insulin drips
  • Peritoneal dialysis
  • Wound vacs (in conjunction with wound care)
• Documentation System: Meditech
• Scheduling:

  • 3 twelve-hour shifts per week
  • Every other weekend required
• Floating Policy: May float between PCU units or to med-surg floors
• Patient Experience:

  • Hourly rounding on days
  • Every 2-hour rounding on nights
  • AIDET communication framework
  • Communication boards used on 7th floor and unit 633

Required Skills & Experience

• Must Have:

  • Critical thinking skills
  • EKG rhythm interpretation
  • Experience with cardiac, insulin, and heparin drips
  • Peripheral IV skills
• Preferred:

  • Peritoneal dialysis experience
• Advanced Skills:

  • ACLS certification
  • Experience with bipaps, high flow oxygen, and multiple oxygen delivery systems
  • Stroke and post-cardiac cath care
  • Tube feedings and NG/Dobhoff tube management

Procedures Performed on Unit

• Peritoneal dialysis
• Thoracentesis
• Paracentesis
• Chest tube insertions
• Dobhoff/NG tube insertions
• Central line dressing changes
• Troubleshooting wound vacs

Certifications Required

• BLS
• ACLS

Dress Code

• Black scrubs required

• Unit offers self-scheduling with 4-week schedules
• Strong teamwork and "care like family" culture
• Techs are utilized to assist with patient care
• Most travelers choose to extend their assignment after the first contract on PCU
