Pediatrics RN Opportunity – Rapid City Hospital, South Dakota

Facility & Unit Overview

  • Hospital System: Monument Health
  • Facility: Rapid City Hospital
  • Unit: Pediatric Unit (15 beds) and PICU (5 beds)
  • Patient Population:
    • General Pediatrics: Patients 0-18 years and stable adult overflow (post-op, cellulitis, diabetes, trauma, mental health, etc.)
    • Advanced Care Pediatrics: Critically ill patients 0-18 years requiring intensive care (respiratory failure, circulatory failure, infectious diseases, trauma, oncology, etc.)

Experience & Education Requirements

  • PICU experience is required
  • Minimum 1.5 years general nursing experience (system requirement)
  • First-time travelers accepted only if > 2 years experience
  • Completion of an approved nursing education program
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in South Dakota

Patient Ratios

  • General Pediatrics: 1 RN to 5 patients
  • Advanced Care Pediatrics (PICU): 1 RN to 1-2 patients

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) not required

Skills & Competencies

  • Physical assessment of patients from newborn to adult
  • Evaluate symptoms and vital signs
  • Administer medications as prescribed
  • Patient and family education on plan of care
  • Proficient in EPIC electronic charting system
  • Ability to titrate drips and care for mechanically ventilated patients in PICU

Unit Support & Resources

  • CNA support (1 CNA per 5 patients)
  • Charge nurse covering both units (floater)
  • RNs and Nurse Aids draw their own labs
  • RNs start their own IVs; ultrasound available for difficult IVs
  • Resource Nurse available (Nurse Clinician/Educator)
  • Case Management and Social Work support
  • Respiratory Therapy available
  • Hospitalist with Pediatric APP support
  • Pediatric Pharmacy, Social Work, and Case Management services

Equipment & Charting

  • EPIC electronic health record system
  • Omnicell medication dispensing system

Floating Opportunities

  • May float to NICU (30 beds, feeder/growers) with 1:3 nurse-to-patient ratio

Orientation

  • 1 day facility orientation (online and in-person)
  • 2 days unit orientation with preceptor

Scheduling & Work Expectations

  • Weekend rotation every other weekend
  • May be placed on low census/on-call status
  • Holiday work required
  • Time off requires pre-approval
