Description

Oncology RN Opportunity – Rapid City Hospital, South Dakota

Facility: Rapid City Hospital (Monument Health)
Location: Rapid City, South Dakota
Specialty: Oncology
Unit: PCU/IMC (Progressive Care Unit/Intermediate Care) – mixed acuity including Telemetry and MedSurg
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Patient Information

  • 16 inpatient beds
  • Patient types include oncology patients (surgical, new diagnosis, complications), medical overflow, intermediate care with telemetry monitoring, prolonged chemotherapy infusions (multiple days), and TPE patients (based on staffing availability)
  • Patient ratio: RN 1:4 (days and nights)

Experience & Education Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year of general nursing experience
  • EPIC experience required (first-time travelers must have EPIC experience)
  • Completion of an approved nursing education program and current RN license with South Dakota Board of Nursing

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy Certification preferred (required to hang chemotherapy)

Skills & Competencies

  • Comfortable with MedSurg assignments (decline if not agreeable)
  • Experience with IMC/PCU level care, cardiac rhythm interpretation, titratable vasoactive drips
  • Proficient in chest port care
  • EPIC charting system experience required
  • Familiarity with Alaris infusion pumps and Omnicell medication dispensing system

Support & Resources on Unit

  • CNA support (ratio 1:8)
  • 24/7 charge nurse available (rarely has patient assignment)
  • Phlebotomy available for peripheral blood draws; RNs draw from central lines
  • Clinical Resource Nurse/Charge Nurse available 24/7
  • Respiratory Therapist available 24/7
  • Hospitalist coverage available

Floating

  • May float to any adult inpatient unit including Med Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, Observation
  • Floating within scope of practice and in rotation with other travelers

Orientation

  • Monument Health traveler orientation (facility-wide)
  • Online education required
  • Unit orientation includes 2 shifts with a qualified preceptor

Scheduling & Time Off

  • Weekend rotation every other weekend
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • Holiday work expected (2 out of 4 major holidays)
  • Time off approval: 1.5 weeks allowed, contract extension required to maintain full 13-week term
  • No return to office (RTO) requests accepted during first 3 weeks of August (Sturgis Bike Rally)

Additional Notes

  • Scrub color: Navy blue
  • Free parking available
  • Monthly audits on pre/post pain scoring with 90% compliance required
  • Travelers must live at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility
  • Permanent staff must wait 1 full year before returning as a traveler
