Description

Registered Nurse - Travel/Contract

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Facility: James Cancer Hospital (Outside In Hospital System)
Unit: James Clinical Resource Unit - Oncology/Progressive Care Unit (ONC/PCU) - Nights


Job Requirements

  • Minimum 2+ years experience in high acuity PCU level or higher
  • Oncology experience preferred but not required
  • Floating to MedSurg and PCU Oncology units including:
    • Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)
    • Acute Leukemia
    • Hematology
    • Medical Oncology
    • PCU Oncology
    • Gynecological Oncology
    • Urology
    • Colorectal
    • Surgical Oncology
    • Corrections Healthcare
  • Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention

Staffing Ratios

  • PCU: 1:3 (can be 1:4 with mixed acuity)
  • MedSurg Telemetry: ideally 1:4, can be 1:5
  • Weekends: variable based on unit needs
  • Scheduling: No set/blocked schedules; self-scheduling requests submitted and balanced

Orientation

  • First week: Monday to Friday, dayshift orientation
  • Weeks 2-3: Five bedside orientation shifts
  • Then independent practice

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only (Instructor/Provider and RQI acceptable)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only (Instructor/Provider and RQI acceptable)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, EFM)

Competency Exams

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (required prior to start)
  • Unit-Specific Competency Exam
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (required within 1 year of start and updated annually; minimum passing score 76%)

Facility & Compliance Requirements

  • Background Check: 7-year criminal background check within 1 year of start
  • Fingerprinting: Ohio BCI & FBI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start (code 3701.881)
  • Physical Exam: Physician documentation within 1 year stating good health and free of contagious disease
  • Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, benzodiazepines, THC, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
  • Immunizations & Health Documentation:
    • Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • TB Questionnaire
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) - 2 vaccines or positive titer
    • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Varicella - 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemption requires documentation)
    • Seasonal Flu Vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
  • COVID-19 Vaccine: Not required but strongly recommended

  • Residency Declaration Form (if using compact license from outside Ohio)
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement (annual)
  • Dress Code and Hand Hygiene Policy acknowledgment
  • Fraud, Waste, and Abuse Training Certificate (annual)
  • Confidential Fraud Waste Abuse and Compliance Reporting Mechanism Form
  • Employment Application including education verification
  • Skills Checklist
  • Education Accreditation Confirmation (must be graduate of accredited nursing program)
  • References: 2 professional references required (at least 1 from a manager or formal leadership)

  • Floating across multiple oncology and med-surg units
  • Emphasis on infection control and patient safety
  • Self-scheduling allows some flexibility but no guaranteed blocked shifts
  • Orientation includes both classroom and bedside components
  • Strict compliance with facility-specific credentialing and health requirements

This position is ideal for experienced RNs with high acuity PCU or oncology experience seeking travel/contract work in a comprehensive cancer center setting.
