    Description

    Birth Center RN / ANM Opportunity

    Location: Tacoma, Washington
    Specialty: Birth Center (Labor & Delivery)
    Contract Length: 13 weeks


    Unit Overview

    • Labor & Delivery Beds: 34 total
      • 15 labor rooms
      • 12 antepartum
      • 4 OB Emergency Department
      • 3 Operating Rooms
    • Postpartum Beds: 18
    • Approximately 300 deliveries per month
    • C-section rate: 33%

    Patient Types & Acuity

    • High acuity OB patients including:
      • Hypertension
      • Magnesium administration
      • C-sections
      • Preterm labor
      • Insulin drips (rare)
      • Vaginal deliveries
      • Epidurals
      • Inductions
      • Robust antepartum care
      • PROM (Premature Rupture of Membranes)
      • Multiple births
      • Postpartum hemorrhage
    • Expectation to fully recover birthing patient and baby post-delivery
    • Second set of hands may assist with newborn care but not guaranteed

    Patient Ratios (per AWHONN guidelines)

    • 1:1 for active labor
    • 1:2 for non-active laboring patients
    • 1:2-3 for antepartum, depending on acuity

    Required Certifications

    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
    • Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring (AWHONN)

    Experience Requirements

    • L&D RN:
      • Minimum 2 years experience with previous travel experience preferred (5+ years ideal)
      • High acuity labor management and delivery of high-risk OB patients
      • Ability to triage OB patients, circulate in OR, perform cervical checks
      • Skilled in reading/interpreting fetal monitoring strips
      • Able to assist as second set of hands for newborn care as needed
    • Antepartum Nurse Manager (ANM):
      • Charge Nurse experience required
      • Minimum 3 years nursing experience
      • Experience managing OB ED patients and high acuity patient types
      • Strong interpersonal and staff management skills
      • Willingness to educate staff, conduct rounding, and assist with conflict resolution
    • EPIC EMR experience is required for all roles

    Unit Support Staff

    • CNA: assists with transports, restocking, OR assistance, room cleanup, instrument care
    • Scrub Techs: LPNs, NRP certified
    • Receptionist/HUC present
    • Charge Nurse: free-floating
    • Phlebotomy: available, RN responsible
    • Resource RN: available depending on staffing
    • Break Nurse: 2 scheduled per shift
    • Respiratory Therapist: 24/7 coverage, NICU RTs attend high-risk deliveries
    • Laborist: 24/7 coverage with residents/fellows and additional physicians/midwives
    • Anesthesia: 1 scheduled during day shift, shared coverage after 5pm

    • IV Pumps: Alaris CareFusion
    • Medication Dispensing: Pyxis
    • Fetal Surveillance Monitors: Centricity/Qx
    • Epidural Pumps: CAD Solaris
    • Panda Warmers
    • Coviden Sequential Compression Devices (SCDs)

    Floating Expectations

    • L&D RNs may float to:
      • Antepartum (within L&D)
      • Postpartum (4th floor, occasionally)
      • Other assignments within scope and experience
    • ANMs do not float

    Orientation

    • Hospital orientation + 2 weeks unit orientation + 1 week independent practice (starts 3 weeks before residents arrive)
    • ANM: 6 shifts unit orientation paired with Charge Nurse
    • Traditional orientation includes 1 day NEO and 2 days on unit (orientation during day shifts even if position is nights)
    • Cardiac rhythm interpretation exam required online prior to arrival

    Scheduling & Shifts

    • Weekend rotation: every other weekend, variable based on need
    • No mandatory on-call requirements; may pick up open shifts as available
    • ANM: no call required
    • Holiday work: required for RNs (fair and equitable), optional for ANM
    • Time off requests require prior approval
    • Shift times:
      • Day: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
      • Night: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
      • ANM night shift: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
    • CAP-only positions will switch from days to nights for last 4 weeks of contract
    • Self-scheduling in Group C (last group to schedule)

    Additional Notes

    • Scrub color provided by facility; scrubs not to be worn outside the facility
    • Free parking and badge access in designated areas
