Job Opportunity: Med/Tele/Peds RN
Location: Devils Lake, North Dakota
Facility: St Alexius Health Devils Lake Hospital
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- MedSurg/Peds unit (no ICU on site)
- May care for Tele or ICU acuity patients but within RN scope of practice
- 25 beds (typical census 12-14 patients)
Patient Population & Diagnoses
- Ages: Pediatrics through Geriatrics
- Variety of acute and chronic illnesses including:
- Respiratory and infectious diseases
- GI issues
- Alcohol intoxication/withdrawal
- Liver disease
- Acute kidney injury (AKI)
- Diabetes mellitus (DM), diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
- Swing bed/rehab patients
- Occasional social admits
Nurse-to-Patient Ratios
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Critical patients: 1:1 or 1:2
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 1 year nursing experience required
- MedSurg, Telemetry, and Pediatrics experience required
- Prefer travel nursing experience but not mandatory
- Wide skill set needed due to diverse patient ages and diagnoses
- RNs must be able to titrate drips (insulin, Lasix, Cardizem, heparin, aminophylline, magnesium, potassium, albumin, blood products)
- Ability to read and interpret telemetry (no monitor techs on unit)
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
Staffing & Support
- No charge nurse on shift; house supervisor/coordinator available
- Patient care techs/nurse aides available (ratio 1:12)
- Nursing coordinator available for assistance
Equipment Used
- Bipap, ventilators, Glidescope
- Heated high flow oxygen, bubble CPAP
- Standard oxygen delivery devices (nasal cannula, oxymask, non-rebreather, high flow cannula)
Scheduling & Shifts
- Shifts: 7am-7pm, 7pm-7am, rotating days and nights
- Block scheduling not guaranteed
- Weekend requirement: minimum 2 out of 6 weekends, possibly more as needed
- Night shift block scheduling: every other weekend
- Holiday shifts required; time off requests considered if submitted in advance
- No call or standby required; overtime available if needed
Orientation
- Minimum 2 shifts of unit/department-specific orientation
Additional Notes
- May be asked to float to other departments but only within scope of practice and experience
- Scrub color: any
- ICU patients occasionally cared for on this floor due to no ICU on site
- Radius rule: candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be employed part-time, full-time, or PRN with any CommonSpirit-associated facility (including CHI or Dignity)
- Time off requests must be submitted upfront (7 days or less per 13-week contract); no additional time off approved after submission
This position is ideal for RNs with MedSurg, Telemetry, and Pediatric experience who are comfortable managing a diverse patient population in a smaller hospital setting without an ICU unit.
