ER RN Opportunity - Devils Lake, North Dakota
Position Overview
- Specialty: Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN)
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Location: Devils Lake, ND
- Department: Emergency Room (ER)
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Preferred Certifications
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
Work Environment & Patient Care
- ER Beds/Trauma Bays: 6
- No separate fast track or triage area; travelers will perform triage duties.
- No separate holding or psych/seclusion rooms; ER holds intermixed.
- Security: No in-house security; local police respond as needed.
- Average Patients per Day: 8-25
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Stable patients: 1:4
- Critically ill patients: 1:1 or 1:2
- Common Patient Types:
- Acute illness, severe injuries, chest pain/acute coronary incidents
- Respiratory distress (asthma, COPD)
- Neurological cases (stroke, seizure, traumatic brain injury)
- Allergic reactions, infectious diseases, intoxication, psychiatric emergencies
- Trauma cases including stabbings, shootings, fractures, burns, domestic injuries
Skills & Experience
- Minimum 2 years ER nursing experience required
- Ability to mix medications and assist with respiratory meds, equipment, and intubation
- Experience with common drips: Insulin, Heparin, Levofed, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Propofol
- Preferred: Previous travel nursing experience
Staffing & Support
- ED Physician or Mid-Level Provider on-site 24/7; second provider from 11am-11pm
- Charge Nurse/Coordinator present each shift for trauma and critical patient support
- Full-time tech support from 11am-11pm; float CNA overnight
- Respiratory Therapist (RT) available 6am-6pm in-house, on-call 24/7
- RNs must assist with respiratory equipment and intubation, and interpret cardiac strips
- Radiology services (X-ray, CT, MRI, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound) adjacent to ER
- RNs may draw blood from IV starts; lab staff available if onsite
Scheduling & Orientation
- Shifts: 7am-7pm, 7pm-7am, rotating days and nights
- Weekend Requirement: 2 out of every 6 weekends
- Holiday Requirement: Yes, with potential for time off if requested in advance
- No call or standby requirement; overtime available if needed
- Floating: May float to Medical-Surgical unit or behavioral health support based on staffing and skills
- Orientation: Minimum 2 shifts of unit/department-specific orientation

- Must live within 50 miles radius
- Candidates may not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
- Required time off (RTO) must be submitted upfront; no additional RTO approved after submission
