Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Specialty: Registered Nurse

Job Description

  • Work in a comprehensive cancer center with 318 acute care beds and 36-bed inpatient units specialized by cancer diagnosis.
  • Floating assignments include MedSurg and PCU Oncology units such as:
    • Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)
    • Acute Leukemia
    • Hematology
    • Medical Oncology
    • PCU Oncology
    • Gynecological Oncology
    • Urology
    • Colorectal
    • Surgical Oncology
    • Corrections Healthcare
  • Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention.
  • Staffing ratios:
    • PCU: 1:3 (can be 1:4 with mixed acuity)
    • MedSurg Tele: ideally 1:4, can be 1:5
  • Weekend shifts vary based on unit needs.
  • No set/blocked scheduling; self-scheduling requests are submitted and balanced before final schedule posting.
  • Orientation:
    • First week: Monday to Friday, dayshift orientation.
    • Weeks 2-3: Five bedside orientation shifts.
    • Then independent practice.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2+ years of experience in high acuity PCU level or higher.
  • Oncology experience preferred but not required.

Certifications Required

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (NIH Stroke Scale Certification)

Staffing and Competency Exams

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (required prior to start).
  • Unit-specific competency exams.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required for all RNs within 1 year of start (with annual updates).

Health and Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • TB questionnaire annually
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer)
    • Hepatitis B (titer or 3-vaccine series)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions reviewed)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending drug screens allowed).
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31).
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended.

Background and Licensing

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide, sex offender, and MVR if applicable.
  • FBI and BCI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start (with specific state codes).
  • Pending background or fingerprint results require attestation.
  • NURSYS verification for RN licenses.
  • State license verification within 30 days of start.
  • Education accreditation confirmation required (accredited nursing programs).
  • Employment application and skills checklist required.
  • Two professional references required (at least one from a manager or formal leadership).

Facility Policies and Documentation

  • Dress code and hand hygiene policy acknowledgment required.
  • Confidential Fraud Waste Abuse and Compliance Reporting training and acknowledgment required.
  • Ethics and compliance policies must be reviewed and signed annually.
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required annually.
