Job Opportunity: Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - Pediatrics
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Facility: Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital, Medical University of South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Respiratory / Neuro Diagnostics
- Role: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - Pediatrics
- Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- On-call: No
- Floating: May float within scope depending on experience; no floating to sister facilities
- Block Schedule: Possible with prior approval (not guaranteed)
- Radius Rule: 60 miles; locals may be accepted on a case-by-case basis
Experience & Certification Requirements
- Experience: Minimum 2 years required
- First-timers: Accepted
- Required Certifications:
- RRT certification
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or ARC accepted
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - required for pediatric units
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA/AAP only
- South Carolina Respiratory Care Provider (SC RCP) license required at start
- Preferred:
- Epic electronic health record experience
- Experience Required: Pediatric, Neonate, and Infant care

Important Notes
- State License: South Carolina RRT license must be active and in hand at start
- Hurricane Season: June through November; travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during this period
- Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
- Pending State License: Not accepted; license must be active before start
- Return to Office (RTO): All RTO requests must be submitted with the application and approved based on unit needs
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Identification:
- I-9 form confirming work eligibility in the US
- Copy of Driver’s License or State ID
- Social Security Card or SSN verification
- Background Checks:
- Annual background check covering last 7 years
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
- Employment Application: Complete with all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
- Education Verification: Diploma or transcripts preferred; education verification required
- Work History Verification: Last 3 clinical employers verified
Certifications & Competencies
- Certifications must be current and valid: No certifications expiring within 30 days of start accepted
- Additional Certifications (as applicable):
- ACLS (not required for pediatric units)
- TNCC (not required for ER RNs)
- NIH Stroke Certification (required for ER)
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) - not required for NICU
- Competency Exams: Required, including medication/pharmacology competency and color blindness testing
- Tech Certification Verification: NBRC certification for RRT required
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical Exam: Initial and annual physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands
- Fit Mask Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
- Vaccinations:
- Tdap within 10 years or declination form
- COVID-19 vaccinations highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
- Seasonal Flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30) or medical/religious exemption
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) and Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series required
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- TB Testing: Negative T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days of start; annual TB questionnaire required
- Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start
Facility Specific Requirements
- Orientation: Completion of OurDay modules prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
- Photo for Badge: Clear, passport-style photo with solid light background, business casual attire, no hats or sunglasses
- Additional for Sterile Processing Techs: Physical assessment and lab panels required (not applicable for RRT)
