Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Facility: Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital

Position Overview

  • Unit: Pediatric Cardiology Intensive Care Unit (PCICU)
  • Unit Size: 29 beds, average daily census 26
  • Unit Recognition:
    • "Gold" Beacon Award-winning unit
    • Voted #4 in US News report and #1 in the nation for outcomes
  • Patient Population: Pediatric patients with congenital heart disease of any age
  • Common Procedures: Cardiac surgery, Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD), Heart Transplant, cardiac catheterization, ECMO/CRRT, and complex cardiac supportive therapies
  • Care Team: Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, Unit Secretaries, Respiratory Therapy, Pediatric Dietitians, Pediatric Pharmacists

Job Details

  • Shift: Rotating 3x12 hour shifts (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM & 7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
  • Ratios: 1:1 or 1:2 depending on patient acuity
  • Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts in a 4-week schedule, holiday rotation included
  • Floating: Yes, within scope to meet facility needs
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks

Experience & Licensure Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years Pediatric Cardiac ICU experience
  • Cardiovascular and Pediatric experience required
  • VAD experience highly preferred
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license required

Certifications Required

  • Mandatory:
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA only
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
  • Preferred:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only (not required for pediatric units but preferred)

Documentation & Compliance

  • I-9 form and attestation confirming work eligibility in the US
  • Copy of Driver's License/State ID
  • Copy of Social Security Card or SSN verification
  • Residency Declaration Form (if working on a compact license)
  • Background check covering 7 years of residence/employment
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Proof of 2 clinical references
  • Complete employment application/resume including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
  • Education verification or diploma/transcripts as placeholder if pending
  • Work history verification of last 3 clinical employers

Health & Safety

  • Physical exam updated annually, attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations/vaccinations required or documented declinations:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or vaccines)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
    • Varicella (positive titer or vaccines)
    • Seasonal Flu vaccine or medical/religious exemption (required during flu season)
    • COVID-19 vaccine highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start or documented history with chest x-ray
  • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start
  • Annual TB questionnaire

Competency Exams

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required
  • Competency exam for applicable unit required
  • Color blindness testing required prior to start

Facility Specific

  • Completion of First Day Instructions (FDI) and OurDay orientation modules prior to start (approx. 2-6 hours)
  • Passport-style badge photo required before start
  • MUSC Orientation Modules must be completed on a computer, not a phone
  • Upload COVID and flu vaccine documentation into MUSC's OurDay platform

Notes

  • This unit does not accept travel pairs
  • Local radius: 60 miles; locals accepted with adjusted pay
  • Guaranteed hours: May be cancelled one shift every 2 weeks
  • RTO (Request Time Off) must be submitted at time of application and approved based on unit needs

This position offers an opportunity to work in a nationally recognized pediatric cardiac ICU with advanced therapies and a multidisciplinary team in a Magnet-designated teaching hospital. Candidates must meet strict licensure, certification, and health requirements to ensure compliance and patient safety.
