ER RN Opportunity - Devils Lake, North Dakota

Position Overview

  • Specialty: Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN)
  • Location: Devils Lake, ND
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Preferred Certifications

  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)

Department Details

  • Department: Emergency Room (ER)
  • Beds/Trauma Bays: 6
  • Fast Track: No
  • Triage: No separate triage area; travelers will perform triage duties
  • Holding Area: No separate holding area; ER holds intermixed, critical patients transferred out
  • Psych/Seclusion Rooms: None
  • Security: No in-house security; local police respond as needed, including for behavioral health patients
  • Average Patients per Day: 8-25
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
    • Stable patients: 1:4
    • Critically ill patients: 1:1 or 1:2
    • Staffing adjusts dynamically based on patient acuity and volume

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • Acute illness and severe injuries
  • Chest pain/acute coronary incidents
  • Respiratory distress (asthma, COPD)
  • Neurological emergencies (stroke, seizure, traumatic brain injury)
  • Allergic reactions, infectious diseases
  • Intoxication and polysubstance use
  • Psychiatric emergencies including suicidal ideation and acute mental health crises
  • Trauma cases: stabbings, shootings, fractures, burns, domestic injuries

Experience & Skills Required

  • Minimum 2 years ER nursing experience
  • Ability to mix medications independently
  • Assist with respiratory medications, equipment, and intubation
  • Preferred: previous travel nursing experience (considered if strong otherwise)

Common Drips Administered

  • Insulin
  • Heparin
  • Levofed (norepinephrine)
  • Cardizem (diltiazem)
  • Amiodarone
  • Propofol

Staffing & Support

  • ED Physician or Mid-Level Provider on-site 24/7 (MD, NP, or PA)
  • Second provider present daily from 11am to 11pm
  • Charge Nurse or Coordinator on each shift to assist with traumas and critical patients
  • Full-time tech support from 11am to 11pm; float CNA available overnight
  • Respiratory Therapist (RT) available in-house 6am-6pm, on-call 24/7
  • RNs expected to assist with respiratory meds, equipment, and intubation
  • RNs must read and interpret cardiac strips
  • Radiology services (X-ray, CT, MRI, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound) adjacent to ER
  • RNs can draw blood from IV starts; lab staff assist when available

Scheduling & Shifts

  • Shift options: 7am-7pm, 7pm-7am (rotating days and nights)
  • Weekend requirement: 2 out of every 6 weekends
  • Holiday requirement: Yes (requests for time off considered if given in advance)
  • No call or standby requirement; overtime available if needed
  • Floating: May float to Medical-Surgical unit or support behavioral health patients 1:1 based on staffing and skill set

Additional Notes

  • Radius rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI or Dignity)
  • Return to Office (RTO) required upfront; no additional RTO approvals after submission
  • Schedule: Day/Night rotation, every other weekend, first to float when needed

This position is ideal for experienced ER nurses comfortable in a dynamic, diverse, and fast-paced emergency department setting.
