Description

PICU Travel Nurse Opportunity

Location: Shreveport, Louisiana
Unit: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)


Job Details

  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Rotation: 5 days on / 2 days off
  • Schedule:
    • 4 days one week, 3 days the next (mandatory)
    • Weekend rotation every other weekend
    • Holiday work: 2 out of 3 holidays expected
  • Patient Ratio: RN 1:2
  • Beds: 6
  • Float Requirements:
    • Required to float to comparable pediatric units and adult units for task-only assignments
    • Preferred candidate cross-trained to float to Adult ICU, Med/Tele units (approval required if not comfortable)

Experience & Certifications

  • Minimum 2 years PICU experience required
  • First-time travelers must have 2 years of permanent staff RN experience in acute care
  • Permanent staff must have been separated for at least 1 year before returning as a traveler
  • Required Certifications:
    • BLS
    • ACLS
    • PALS
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
    • NRP (preferred)
  • Must pass an EKG competency exam prior to arrival (includes MedSurg RNs)

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • MS, DKA, Sepsis, Respiratory Failure
  • Cardiac (minimal)
  • Orthopedic post-op (spinal surgeries, hips, etc.)
  • Neurological (post-craniotomy, EVD drains)
  • No trauma or transplant patients

Skills & Competencies

  • Proficient in:
    • PIV skills, CVL care, telemetry monitoring
    • Wound care, drains, wound vacs
    • Titrating pressors, insulin, heparin, sedation agents, pain medication drips
  • Phlebotomy: peripheral blood draws required; primary RN to pull central lines
  • Charge nurse role includes modified patient assignments
  • IV/VAT team not applicable
  • Resource nurse role available (Head RN/Educator)

  • Respiratory Therapist available 24/7
  • Hospitalist on call 24/7
  • Intensivist available 24/7
  • Goal staffing: 3-4 RNs per shift

Technology & Equipment

  • EMR: Meditech Expanse
  • IV Pumps: Alaris
  • Medication Dispensing: Pyxis

Orientation & Culture

  • Hospital orientation followed by 2 shifts on the unit
  • Unit culture: traveler friendly, family oriented
  • Scrub color: Pewter
  • Dress code:
    • T-shirts must be gray, white, or black with hospital monogram
    • Jackets must be gray or black
    • Badges must be worn above the waist and visible at all times
  • Parking: Free

Additional Notes

  • No transport call
  • No call required
  • Time off requests:
    • Up to 7 days off approved without manager approval
    • Must extend contract 1 week for every full week off requested
    • Decline if more than 7 days requested off
    • Only 1 weekend off per 13-week contract allowed
