Registered Nurse - Oncology (Travel/Contract)

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Facility Type: Acute Care Hospital, Level I Trauma Center, Magnet Facility
Beds: 562 staffed beds
Charting System: Cerner
Scrub Color: Any solid color
Parking: Permit required, no cost


Position Details

  • Specialty: Oncology
  • Shift Options:
    • 4 shifts of 12 hours (days, 7:15 AM - 6:45 PM)
    • 3 shifts of 12 hours (days) - can accommodate 3x12 if requested
  • Average Daily Census: 24 patients (24 rooms/beds)
  • Experience Required: Minimum 1 year oncology nursing experience
  • First-time Travelers: Accepted
  • Weekend Requirement: Work every other weekend
  • On-call: Not required
  • Floating: May float within scope as needed
  • Block Scheduling: Open to discussion with manager
  • Locals Accepted: Yes, no radius restrictions
  • License Requirement: Must have active Illinois nursing license or be in application process
  • Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: Ideally no more than 5 days

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Required Certifications & Skills

  • Certifications:
    • Chemotherapy certification preferred (ONC cert not needed)
    • ACLS, BLS, PALS (required based on unit/specialty, AHA or RQI acceptable)
    • State nursing license verification (primary source verification)
    • NURSYS verification required
  • Chemotherapy Skills:
    • Administration of chemotherapy (IV push, continuous infusion, oral)
    • Body fluid handling post-chemotherapy
    • Management and disposal of cytotoxic spills
    • Monitoring chemotherapy and recognizing abnormal lab values
  • IV Therapy/Infusion Skills:
    • Accessing ports and central lines (PICC, implanted lines)
    • Administration of coagulation factors, antifungals, antivirals, blood/blood products
    • Central line blood draws and care
    • Starting IVs

Special Requirements & Compliance

  • Background Checks:
    • Within 30 days of start, covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
    • Includes SSN trace, counties, states, national criminal, sex offender, FACIS Level 3
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG checks required
  • Fingerprinting:
    • Illinois Health Care Worker Registry Search required for clinical candidates without IL license
    • Fingerprints must be taken in Illinois, completed 3 business days prior to start
  • Education Verification:
    • Initial degree verification required (official or unofficial transcripts accepted if pending)
  • State-Specific Searches:
    • Illinois Department of Corrections Inmate Search
    • Illinois Most Wanted Search
    • Illinois State Police Murderer and Violent Offender Against Youth Registry
  • Competency Exam: Required for all clinical candidates
  • References: Two professional references required for clinical candidates

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Within 1 year of start, signed by MD, NP, PA, or equivalent
  • Fit Mask Test: Required (3M 1860, 1870, or 1870+ masks acceptable)
  • TB Testing: 2-step PPD, TSPOT, or Qgold within 1 year; chest x-ray if positive TB test
  • Immunizations:
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines, positive titer, or declination)
    • Hepatitis B vaccine series, positive titer, or declination
    • Varicella vaccine or positive titer or declination
  • Drug Testing: 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Flu Vaccination: Required or approved medical/religious exemption for 2025-26 season

Additional Notes

  • Guaranteed hours may be adjusted with client call-offs up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment without pay for cancelled hours.
  • Badge photo required within one week of signing contract.
  • Candidate must review and sign facility-specific Code of Conduct and Parking Permit forms within 7 days of contract signing.
  • Facility accommodates latex allergies.
