Description

Travel RN Opportunity: Medical/Surgical Intensive Care RN

Location: Prescott, Arizona
Specialty: Intensive Care (Medical/Surgical ICU)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Patient Population

  • CVICU: 12 beds
  • COVID Unit: 8 beds
  • Medical-Surgical ICU: 8 beds
  • Progressive Care Unit (PCU): 16-20 beds (with double occupancy rooms)
  • All units under the same Critical Care service line

Nurse-to-Patient Ratios

  • ICU: 1:1 to 1:2 depending on acuity and staffing
  • PCU: 1:3 to 1:4

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)

Experience & Skills Required

  • Must pass a dysrhythmia exam with a minimum score of 80% within two attempts before contract signing
  • Strong EKG interpretation skills required
  • Experience with weaning and troubleshooting ventilators
  • Ability to titrate critical care drips (pressors, paralytics, sedation, antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants)
  • Preferred experience with:
    • Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP)
    • Prismaflex Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)
  • Skills checklist includes: EVD, chest tubes, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters
  • Able to care for post-open heart surgery patients if experienced
  • Nurses should be able to interpret ABGs

  • COVID-19 (including manual proning)
  • Low-level neurological patients
  • External Ventricular Drain (EVD)
  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
  • Sepsis
  • Parenteral Nutrition (PN)
  • Acute Renal Failure (ARF)
  • Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)
  • Rhabdomyolysis
  • Post Myocardial Infarction (MI)
  • Detoxification patients
  • Chest tubes, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters
  • Surgical and cardiac surgical patients including Impella, TAVR, VAD devices, STEMI, PCI, CEA, IABP

Staffing & Support

  • Charge nurses may take patient assignments only as a last resort
  • Typically 2 charge nurses shared between ICUs and PCU
  • House supervisor available 24/7 with some exceptions
  • No nurse aides on the unit
  • Intensivists in-house 24/7 on West campus with NP support
  • Respiratory therapists cover all areas but not present in ICU 24/7

Equipment & Technology

  • Ventilators (nurses expected to troubleshoot and assist with weaning)
  • Glidescopes used during intubation
  • BiPAP, CPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), Vapotherm
  • Telemetry monitors (Nihon Kohden brand) with nurses responsible for reading strips

Scheduling & Shifts

  • 12-hour shifts, 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am
  • Schedules made 4 weeks in advance with some self-scheduling allowed, subject to manager approval
  • No block scheduling typically allowed
  • Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts per pay period (weekend nights Fri-Sat, weekend days Sat-Sun, with some variation)
  • Holiday requirement: 1 holiday plus an eve of another holiday during winter season (not all holidays required)
  • Call/standby: Possible low census call about once every 6 weeks, no scheduled call

Floating & Orientation

  • Floating required as part of rotation; may float to PCU, MST, or EC ICU/PCU as needed
  • Orientation includes 8 hours general hospital orientation plus 1-2 shifts on unit with preceptor/buddy
  • Additional orientation/checkoff for special skills (e.g., open heart surgery, CRRT)

Dress Code

  • Professional scrubs of any color except camouflage
  • Transitioning to navy scrubs in October

Additional Notes

  • Radius rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN at any CommonSpirit-associated facility (including CHI or Dignity) in the past year
  • Prescreen and auto offer available if return-to-office (RTO) is less than 7 days and no holiday requests
