Registered Nurse (PCU RN) - Travel/Contract
Location: Columbia, South Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Registered Nurse
- Shift: 3x12 hour shifts, Nights (7 PM - 7 AM)
- Patient Ratio: 1:4
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend if needed
- On-call: No
- Floating: May be required to float within scope to like units or sister facilities
- Experience Required: Minimum 2 years of RN experience
- First Time Travelers: Not accepted
- License Required: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license
- Certifications Required: BLS, ACLS
- Preferred Certification: NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Special Requirements: Epic electronic health record experience required, experience with 1:4 patient ratio

Important Seasonal Note
- During hurricane season (June - November, peak in August and September), all staff including travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams. New or extension assignments during this time should be considered carefully.
Required Documentation & Compliance
Licensure & Certifications
- Active SC RN license or Compact license (primary source verification required)
- BLS and ACLS certifications (AHA only; no certificates expiring within 30 days of start)
- NIH Stroke Scale certification preferred/required for ER and some units
- NURSYS verification required for all RNs
- Other certifications as applicable (PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM) depending on unit
- Epic experience mandatory
Health & Immunizations
- Physical exam within 90 days of start, updated annually, confirming ability to work without restrictions
- Tdap vaccine within 10 years or declination form
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
- Annual TB questionnaire
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: positive titers or vaccination series required
- Hepatitis B: titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start
- Flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30) or medical/religious exemption (no declinations accepted)
- COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
- Respirator medical clearance (RespSafety questionnaire) required annually
Background & History
- Annual background check covering last 7 years, including SSN trace, criminal, sex offender, and FACIS 3
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- Proof of 2 clinical references, including at least one from the unit of assignment
- Complete employment application/resume with no unaccounted gaps, including all PTO and contract assignments
- Work history verification for last 3 clinical employers
- Education verification required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if pending
Facility Specific Requirements
- Completion of First Day Instructions (FDI) and OurDay orientation modules prior to start (approx. 2-6 hours)
- Upload COVID and flu vaccine documentation into OurDay platform
- Clear, passport-style photo for badge (frontal view, solid light background)
- Completion of MUSC-specific confidentiality, security, contractor forms, and ID badge request prior to start
- Physical assessment for sterile processors if applicable
- Radiation badge required for certain specialties (not required for PCU RN)
