    Travel RN - Oncology (Blood Cancer Unit)

    Location: Denver, Colorado
    Employment Type: Travel


    Unit Information

    • Unit: Blood Cancer Unit / Oncology
    • Beds: 18
    • Staff: 37 total
    • Shift Staffing:
      • Day Shift: 1 charge nurse (no patient assignment), 3-5 RNs, 1 CNA
      • Night Shift: 1 charge nurse (no patient assignment), 3-5 RNs
    • Patient Ratios: 3-4 patients per nurse
    • Equipment: Telemetry, bladder scanner, Alaris pump and Alaris PCA
    • EMR System: Meditech

    Job Requirements

    • Specialty: Registered Nurse (RN) - Oncology
    • Required Years of Experience: 2 years in specialty
    • Certifications Required:
      • BLS (Basic Life Support)
      • Chemotherapy Certification (Chemo Certification)
    • Licenses: Registered Nurse License

    Skills & Experience

    • Compassionate care for oncology and chronic patient populations is a must
    • Quick learner
    • Preferred:
      • Chemo and biotherapy certification
      • Step-down experience (experience with standing orders such as fluid bolus, first fever)
      • Experience with very acute hematology patients

    Typical Procedures Performed

    • Lumbar puncture
    • Bone marrow biopsies (with conscious sedation or no sedation)
    • Thoracentesis

    • The unit has won "Unit of Distinction" 4 out of the last 5 years within the hospital system, recognized for quality measures including evidence-based practice, infection control, nurse certification rates, and low RN turnover
    • Emphasis on primary nursing with less reliance on CNAs/PCTs; majority of patient care interventions are performed by nurses
    • Team-oriented culture that values helping and supporting each other
    • Staff are described as fun-loving, dedicated, knowledgeable oncology nurses who are passionate about their work

    Additional Notes

    • Nurses will be around hazardous drugs but will not administer chemotherapy or biotherapy unless certified
    • Education is provided for safe handling of excreta related to hazardous drugs
    • The unit administers many medications, blood products, and electrolyte replacements
