OB Nurse Job Opportunity - Ellsworth, Maine

General Information

• Start Date: ASAP
• Facility Size: 64 beds
• Level III Nursery
• Annual Births: Approximately 200 per year
• Unit Beds: 4 Labor & 4 Postpartum
• Minimum Experience Required: 2 years in OB/L&D
• First-Time Travelers: Accepted only with at least 3 years L&D experience

Patient Population & Care Model

• Patient Types:

  • Low risk pregnancies only; all high-risk patients are transferred out for labor and delivery
  • LDRP model: patients stay on the unit for Antepartum, Intrapartum, and Postpartum/Couplet care
  • Care includes well babies; no dedicated nursery or nursery RN
  • Common conditions: postpartum hemorrhage, pre-eclampsia, HELLP syndrome, bilirubin babies, NAS babies, feeders/growers
  • Also care for low-acuity MSU surgical patient overflow (IV antibiotics, swing bed, rehab)
  • No infectious patients or telemetry monitoring on the unit

Patient Ratios (per AWHONN guidelines)

• Laboring: 1:2
• Active Labor: 1:1
• Couplets: 1:3-4
• Med/Surg overflow: 1:2-3

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• NRP
• Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring
• STABLE (must be completed within 30 days of start)

Skills & Experience Required

• Experience with all phases of Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) care
• Comfortable caring for well newborns (vital signs, thermoregulation, hypoglycemia, bilirubin, NAS)
• Experience managing shoulder dystocia, epidural management, nitrous oxide, intrathecal spinal analgesia
• Will assist in C-sections only to catch babies and provide neonatal care (no circulating duties)

Unit Support & Staffing

• Nursing staff: minimum 2 nurses overnight, sometimes 3
• No CNAs on unit
• HUC available 4 days per week
• Midwife provides most care
• OB physician available on call
• Charge nurse present
• Phlebotomy available
• Respiratory Therapy 24/7
• Hospitalist 24/7

Charting System

• Cerner

Floating

• May float to Med Surg or ED for tasks only (no patient assignments)

Orientation

• General hospital orientation plus 1 shift on unit

Scheduling

• Weekend rotation: every other weekend
• No on-call responsibilities
• Holiday work: every other holiday
• Time off requires manager approval
