Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Pediatric Critical Care Float Pool)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Position: Pediatric Critical Care float pool RN
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM), totaling 36 hours/week
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend plus holiday rotation
  • Patient Ratios: 1:2 or 1:3
  • Float Requirement: RN will float within scope to all Pediatric units in the hospital (CVPICU, NICU, PICU)
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years of Pediatric ICU experience
  • First-time travelers accepted if experience requirements are met
  • License Required: South Carolina RN License or Multi-State/Compact RN License
  • Certifications Required: BLS, PALS (American Heart Association only)
  • Preferred Experience: ECMO, CRRT
  • Block Scheduling: Possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
  • Local Radius: 60 miles; locals accepted on a case-by-case basis
  • Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Hurricane Season Notice: Travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during hurricane season (June-November, peak in August-September)

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • BLS (Basic Life Support): AHA certification required
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support): Required for all pediatric units except Pediatric OR (preferred for Pediatric OR)
  • South Carolina RN License or Compact License: Primary source verification required; walk-through/temp license option available for eligible candidates
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): Not required for pediatric units but may be required for other units if applicable
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program): AHA/AAP certification required
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course): Required except for ER RNs
  • Other Certifications: May include NIH Stroke Certification, EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring), IV Therapy (for select LPNs), and others as applicable

Experience & Competencies

  • Minimum 2 years Pediatric ICU experience required
  • ECMO and CRRT experience preferred
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exams required as applicable
  • Color Blind Testing required prior to start
  • Competency exams required, with pediatric-specific OR competency preferred but not mandatory

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands, updated annually
  • Fit test for N95 mask (O&M Halyard FLUIDSHIELD or 3M Aura 1870+) within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers required or proof of immunity for:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years or declination form)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or vaccines)
    • Varicella (positive titer or vaccines)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
  • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start or proof of prior positive with follow-up chest x-ray
  • Annual TB questionnaire completion required
  • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
  • COVID-19 vaccinations highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (August-April)
  • Sterile Processing Techs have additional lab and physical assessment requirements (not applicable for RN role)

Background & Verification Requirements

  • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, including:
    • SSN Trace
    • Statewide and national criminal checks
    • Sex offender registry
    • FACIS 3 and international searches if applicable
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education verification required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholders if needed
  • Work history verification of last 3 clinical employers required
  • NURSYS verification for all RNs and LPNs/LVNs
  • State-specific Medicaid excluded provider search for South Carolina

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Completion of orientation modules and OurDay system prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
  • Upload COVID and flu vaccine documentation into OurDay system
  • Clear, passport-style badge photo required before start
  • Radiation badge may be required depending on unit (not typically for pediatric critical care)
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Complete employment application including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps

Additional Notes

  • Travelers must submit all requested documentation at time of submission for approval
  • All certifications must be valid and not expiring within 30 days of start date
  • Facility may call off shifts as needed; guaranteed hours are not absolute
  • Travelers should be prepared for possible emergency assignments during hurricane season

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized pediatric critical care environment with a supportive float pool structure, requiring strong pediatric ICU experience and certifications.
