PCU RN Position - Nebraska (Kearney)

Job Details

  • Specialty: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Registered Nurse
  • Location: Kearney, Nebraska
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: 12-hour shifts (Day: 06:30-18:30, Night: 18:30-06:30)
  • Hours Guaranteed: 36 hours per week
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: Minimum of 2 holidays during contract
  • Floating: Required to float to MedSurg or ICU for PCU acuity patients

Unit Information

  • Department: PCU
  • Beds: 40 beds (average daily census 24)
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4-5 (days and nights)
  • Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs: Yes, ratio 1:12
  • Charge Nurse: Present on each shift and takes patient assignments
  • Patient Population: Adults with cardiac med/surg, dialysis, cancer, vascular issues, sepsis, respiratory conditions, stroke, post stent/pacer placement, renal failure
  • Common Procedures: RNs required to titrate drips (Heparin, Nitro, Dopamine, Cardizem, Amiodarone, insulin)
  • Respiratory Therapy Equipment: High flow oxygen; RNs troubleshoot but do not manage vents, CPAP, BiPAP
  • Telemetry: RNs must read and interpret their own telemetry strips

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of unit experience
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS required
  • Competencies: Must be competent in managing arterial lines
  • Orientation: 1 day of unit-specific orientation
  • Exam: Pass/fail open book exam during orientation; 90% required to pass
  • Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs
  • Additional Policies:
    • Artificial nails prohibited in patient care areas
    • Driver’s license required to verify candidate location within 50-mile radius
    • No full-time, part-time, or PRN employment with certain affiliated facilities allowed
    • Blocked scheduling generally not approved except for weekends
    • No duo assignments sharing care or schedules

  • Focus on patient experience, responsiveness, communication about medications, and hospital environment
  • Use of overhead lifts, portable lifts, vein finders, bladder scanners
  • Diverse patient population, primarily Hispanic and Somalian
  • Successful nurses are team players, flexible, adaptable, and have strong communication skills

Additional Notes

  • Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approved after submission
