Labor & Delivery RN Travel Opportunity
Location: Silverdale, Washington
Unit: Birthing Center / Mother Baby
Job Summary
Seeking an experienced Labor & Delivery (L&D) Registered Nurse for a travel contract. The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of L&D experience (1 year considered with multiple prior travel assignments), hold an active Washington RN license (pending license submissions accepted; temp license takes ~4 weeks), and current BLS, ACLS, and NRP certifications.
Unit Details
- Beds: 34 total (14 postpartum, 2 triage, 2 OR suites for C-sections)
- Birth Volume: Approximately 150-180 births per month (2,133 deliveries in 2022)
- Staffing Ratios:
- L&D: 1:2
- Couplets (postpartum): 1:3-4
- Support Staff:
- 1 surgical tech 24/7
- Patient care assistant with clerical duties each shift
- In-House Coverage:
- OB/GYN and hospitalist 24/7
- Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) 24/7 in nursery
- OB anesthesia provider 24/7 with call room on unit
- Respiratory therapist equipment available (vents, CPAP, BiPAP)
- Telemetry: Tele/Monitor techs available for PACU after C-section; RNs read their own strips
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring System: Centricity-perinatal
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 2 years L&D experience preferred (1 year with multiple travel assignments considered)
- Must have LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum) experience
- Comfortable attending deliveries independently and circulating in C-sections
- Able to assist with catching and transitioning newborns
- Experience titrating drips such as Magnesium, Pitocin, and Insulin
- Must be comfortable functioning in postpartum care and low-risk deliveries
- Must be adaptable to unit workflows, policies, and feedback
Certifications Required
- Active Washington RN license (pending license submissions accepted)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Intermediate or advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM) preferred
Scheduling & Orientation
- Contract length: 13 weeks
- Block scheduling available upon request
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (days: Sat & Sun; nights: Fri & Sat)
- Holiday rotation with permanent staff
- Call/standby: When on standby, response time is 45 minutes
- Floating: No floating outside the Mother Baby unit; travelers must be competent in postpartum and low-risk deliveries
- Orientation:
- 8 hours compliance with manager
- 8 hours EPIC training
- 2-3 twelve-hour shifts of unit-specific orientation
Unit Policies & Notes
- Surgical hand scrub policy:
- Remove all jewelry from hands and forearms
- No artificial nails or enhancements (tips, acrylics, gels, nail art, etc.)
- Natural, well-manicured fingernails no longer than ¼ inch beyond fingertip
- No open lesions or breaks in skin integrity on hands, forearms, or cuticles
- Scrubs and locker provided
- Free charge nurse role on both shifts (charge nurse does not take patient assignment)
- Manager is supportive and provides feedback to ensure quality care
- Must be open and adaptable to unit workflows and feedback
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Gestational age: 33 weeks and above
- High-risk patients including:
- Preeclampsia
- Diabetes
- Psychosocial issues
- Positive illicit substance use
This position offers a dynamic environment with a high birth volume and a supportive team, ideal for experienced L&D nurses comfortable with independent deliveries and comprehensive maternal-newborn care.
