Travel RN Opportunity: Medical/Surgical Intensive Care RN
Location: Prescott, Arizona
Specialty: Intensive Care (ICU)
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Unit Details
- Critical Care Service Line includes:
- CVICU: 12 beds
- COVID Unit: 8 beds
- Medical-Surgical ICU: 8 beds
- Progressive Care Unit (PCU): 16-20 beds (with double occupancy rooms)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- ICU: 1:1 to 1:2 depending on acuity and staffing
- PCU: 1:3 to 1:4
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
Experience & Skills Required
- Must pass a dysrhythmia exam (minimum 80% within two attempts) before contract signing
- Strong EKG interpretation skills required
- Experience with weaning and troubleshooting ventilators
- Ability to titrate critical care drips (pressors, paralytics, sedation, antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants)
- Preferred experience with:
- IABP (Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump)
- Prismaflex CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy)
- Experience across all ICU areas is necessary as travelers will float between units
- Ability to interpret ABGs (arterial blood gases)
- Skills checklist includes: EVD (External Ventricular Drain), chest tubes, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters
- Experience with cardiac surgical patients, including open heart, Impella, TAVR, VAD devices, STEMI, PCI, CEA
Patient Population / Common Diagnoses
- COVID-19 patients requiring manual proning
- Low-level neurological patients
- Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), sepsis, acute renal failure (ARF)
- Post-myocardial infarction (MI), detox patients
- Patients with chest tubes, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters
- Surgical and post-surgical patients, including cardiac surgery
- Patients on CRRT, IABP, and other advanced cardiac support devices
Staffing & Support
- Charge nurses generally do not take patient assignments unless necessary
- House supervisor available 24/7 with some exceptions
- No nurse aides on the unit
- Intensivists in-house 24/7 on the West campus with NP support
- Respiratory therapists cover all areas but not present in ICU 24/7
- Nurses expected to troubleshoot and assist with ventilators and airway management tools (Glidescopes)
- Telemetry monitors (Nihon Khoden) present; nurses read their own strips
Equipment & Technology
- Ventilators, BiPAP, CPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), Vapotherm
- Glidescopes for intubation
- Telemetry monitoring with nurses responsible for strip interpretation
Scheduling & Shifts
- 12-hour shifts, 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am
- Schedules made 4 weeks in advance with some self-scheduling allowed (finalized by manager)
- No block scheduling typically allowed
- Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts per pay period (weekend nights and days vary)
- Holiday requirement: 1 holiday plus an eve of another holiday during winter season
- Call/standby: Possible low census call about once every 6 weeks, no scheduled call
Floating & Orientation
- Floating required within ICU, PCU, MST, and possibly EC ICU/PCU as needed
- Orientation includes:
- 8 hours general hospital orientation
- 1 twelve-hour shift with preceptor on unit
- 1 twelve-hour shift with a buddy for support
- Additional orientation/checkoff for specialized skills (e.g., open heart surgery, CRRT)
Dress Code
- Professional scrubs of any color except camouflage
- Transitioning to navy scrubs in October
Additional Notes
- Radius rule: Candidates must not have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN within 50 miles at any CommonSpirit facility (including CHI or Dignity) in the past year
- Prescreen and auto offer possible if return-to-office (RTO) is less than 7 days and no holiday requests
This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs with strong critical care skills looking for a travel opportunity in a busy, multi-unit critical care environment.
